I want to bid for a piece of furniture on ebay, but only if I can pick it up myself from 40 miles away.
I have measured by boot (Ford Ka) and the item would stick out about 20" out the back, at an upward angle, which would probably obscure my view from my rear view mirror.
Is it ok to drive like this or is it illegal (including having something sticking out the back liKe that)?

As long as the load is secure and you have door mirrors then its legal............unless your number plate is not on show/obscured.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

What's a tailgate...is it the boot door? This will be tied down to the furniture not flapping open.
The lights and number plate will not be obscured.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -

What would be the best way to ensure the laod way secure, and not able to slip out the back if I have to brake suddenly?I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -

It's more likely to go forward under braking.0 -

If you brake suddenly the load will tend to move forwards not backwards. Have you been driving long?0 -

D'oh, of course:o. Yes I have But in my defence, your honour I haven't slept for 2 nights due to illness so not thinking entirely straight. I was over eager to ensure I 'secured the load', so the question still stands: what would be the best way to do this?
I won't drive anywhere till caught up on sleep.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
Easiest way is to fasten a rope from the catch on the tailgate ( boot door ) to where it latches. This will hold it down and stop your load falling out.
To do this you need to move the catch on the tailgate to the position it is in when the tailgate is shut.0 -
Thanks paperbird - of course!
