Vegetable oil is not healthy for a cat, they are obligate carnivores who require only very small amounts of unsaturated fats.

  • i give my dog drained tuna which was in spring water as a treat about once maybe twice a week, he loves it, he doesent like salmon though....i gave it to him once before thinking he would love it and he didnt? he is very fussy though.....
  • Well ..... Maisie has just had her first lot - tinned Sardines in tomato sauce ...... think I can say from the way her dinner disappeared (even quicker than normal!) - that they were a hit!:D

She has tinned Pilchards in tomato sauce to try next:)

How often would you give them - I was thinking once a week?

(she does get a HM mix of meat & veg with her kibble each meal). TIA:)

My 2 have pilchards at least twice a week but there isn't really a limit, just be careful if she's sensitive to new foods... don't want the runs ;)

Just bear in mind that tomatoes as suspected to aggravate arthritis - I would rinse all the sauce off before feeding them personally.

I doubt the sauce in commercially available tins contains any tomato worth worrying about......

    Glenryck's pilchards
Pacific Pilchard (60%), Tomato Juice from Concentrate (38%), Salt, Maize Starch, Thickener - Guar Gum

Not just to tomato to worry about there but the sugar that would be in the concentrate too, I would still rinse them.
  • Thanks both - there was a bit of a debate about tomato sauce and feeding to cats a while ago (I thought I'd read / heard somewhere it was a "no no") but others thought it was OK.

TBH there wasn't a lot of sauce in the Sardines but will check the Pilchards when I open them and if there is a lot, I'll rinse.

Personally I don't bother rinsing but you make a fair point.

I still think the concentrations of the above are not worth worrying about if fed in the quantities we're talking about

Much of the oil leaches into the tomato sauce whilst the fish is cooked in the can, your call whether you feed it but you may want to supplement the omega-3s if you don't. I would not worry about a little natural sugar in the tomato - if my girl actually ate fish - and I am the anti-carb queen! :o

The atlantic pilchards I have are Princes in the large can "pilchards 65%, water, tomato paste, salt." Fat 10.1%, carbs 2.4%, sodium 0.5%. Not sure how that compares to the Glenryk.
