Is it still acceptable to commute to work wearing trainers??

  • I do! I live on top of a hill which often gets muddy in the rain so any nice shoes I wore to walk down it would be ruined before I even got on the train, so I wear my trainers to walk from home to the train station and from the station at the other end to the office and then change into my good shoes when I get in. My trainers stay in my desk drawer until the end of the day to prevent potential smelliness offending the office (I bought some Trainer Tamer insoles for them as well).

Like others have said this is very common in London, which is where I am, and no-one bats an eyelid. Wear your trainers with pride!

Totally sensible thing to do. Tell them to look at London and New York - lots of immaculately dressed women wearing sensible clumpy trainers, striding along confidently. It's really obvious that they change their shoes at work.

Yes if your sensible, no if you care what you look like, which one wins? Is there not a better alternative than trainers? Cant think what, maybe Uggs? or those fit flop boots that tone but look like normal boots? Personally I care far too much about what I look like to be seen wearing trainers outside the gym, no one might say anything to you but they will be thinking it, your friends are right.

  • I sometimes do it the other way round! I'm mostly at a desk all day so usually wear pretty shoes then change into a pair of sheepskins if I have a bit of running about to do at work. I have about 3 complete changes of clothes at work due to the variety of tasks I get involved in. I always have wellies on standby!

When you're still slim in 10 years time and they've all gained weight from lack of exercise, and when your feet are still in reasonable shape and they're hobbling around from the damage caused by the heels you can remind them of this :)

It's up to you to figure which is more important, how you look or your health...I know which I'd choose

Just think of the state of Victoria Beckhams' feet after too many years wearing high heels.....your feet will still be fab when you're fifty, and think of the health benefits of load-bearing impact exercise such as helping prevent osteoporosis or heart disease!

I don't even bother changing out of my trainers once I get to work! My feet are under the desk 95% of the day, my boss doesn't care, I don't see any issues. I did buy some smarter, darker coloured trainers so they weren't so glaringly obvious (less likely to draw people's eyes to them than white/colourful trainers) so maybe if your budget allows, invest in some comfy black trainers for the purpose - I bet most people you walk past won't even notice that you're wearing trainers.

i wouldn't do it on the 1st day but once you are there, then its fine.

I just wore trainers into work and had a pair of "work shoes" that i kept at the office in a drawer, saved carrying things around.

I keep a pair of heels in the office, and wear my trainers when I walk to work. You do see loads of people doing it, and personally, I found the expense of getting my shoes re-heeled almost every month was much more of a pain than maybe looking a bit odd for an hour a day :D
