Firstly let me say I am a smoker
My Grrr is about someone I know who also smokes between 10 and 20 cigarettes per day but is constantly complaining she has no money for her kids food and clothing or to pay the bills etc.
Now obviously I know this is an addiction as I am as bad, but I suggested she smoke tobacco ( roll ups ) if she cant kick the habit ( this is what I do, as I am weak lol ) but apparently she dosn't like the taste of these.
My average cost per week to smoke roll ups is around £10 and her average cost per week is between £28.00 and £50.00 per week based on her smoking between 10 and 20 per day of regular cigarettes.
Hmmm I just thought do the math ! Grrr.

Forgot to mention that although I do smoke roll ups, I wish I could afford to smoke normal cigarettes, I do prefer the taste of them and I also find the inconvenience of having to roll them a pain, would rather just be able to grab one from a packet, but my finances are limited and for me to keep up with my annoyingly bad habit, this is the only way I can afford it.0

When she moans again, I'd just say to her:
"you have 2 options - either smoke roll-ups or give up altogeher (I do appreciate that smoking is an addiction but there is free help available).
And if you don't do either of those, don't come moaning to me again about not being able to afford essentials."
Or could she be hinting for a loan from you?0 -
Well if she doesn't like smoking roll ups, then it's not an option to help her addiction is it?
Why don't you offer to give up with her, give her some practical help?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -

Apparently she needs to smoke, as apparently so do I
But as for the reason given to not smoking roll ups is because she dosn't like the taste of them ! Well my dd dosn't like the taste of her medicine that she has to take , yet she knows she has to take it ! I know giving up is hard, I have tried totally down to finances ( I know health benefits should be the main factor ) But just can't seem to do it.
So I adapted, smoke roll ups and put up, shut up and stoppped moaning, I think it has even helped me a bit as I'm sure I smoke less due to the time it takes me to roll them
Its my addiction, my problem and I would not have my kids go without because of it. And I certainly wouldn't expect people to feel sorry for me because I can't adapt a bit for my kids.0 -

That's the crux of it isn't it? I can't see putting anything before my kids, addiction or not - it was self inflicted and it CAN be stopped.
No sympathy for her but l do for her kids.
Happy moneysaving all.0 -
Perhaps you could see if an e-cig would be more cost effective?0

Used to have 2 friends who would both stand at their back door smoking whilst their kids were on 9p beans for dinner yet again. They weren't so impressed with my opinion on that when they moaned about being broke...It aint over til I've done singing....0

I know what you mean. I get a bit grrr with someone I know.
They are so poor they couldn't afford a perscription once (before we got them for free here in Scotland) so they were just going to suffer but yet could afford to smoke 2 packets a day.
I have heard them say that they can't afford this, that or the other for their kids and I think well why not cut down or stop if it upsets you that much.
So I can see how you are grrr.
I just ignore this person now as I think they enjoy playing the poor me card. Although I do feel for the kids but I know they are not missing out on food and a roof over their head so it's not that bad.February 2013 NSD - 40
