Giving a months notice, + general moving advice.

Right so after a few drastic changes of circumstances I am having to move! Terrible in many ways, fantastic in others. Hopefully the fantastic will start to outweigh the terrible...
Anyway, I will be giving in my months notice before the 26th of this month, to run to the 27th August. This is the date I moved in.
Now I pay rent on the 1st of the month. I am 99.99% sure when I moved in I paid a bit extra to cover those 3/4 days before the monthly rent began. However my tenancy fixed term definitely ran 27th -26th, has moved to periodic and nothing has 'changed' since.
So, will I be due a refund of those days if I pay a full months rent on the 1st, if my rental period only runs to the 27th? If so, do I ask for this 'in advance' ie 'here is my notice, please advise me of the rent I must pay until the 27th' or ask for it back at the end?
Another few daft things I need to change. I recently renewed my contents insurance, and after August will have no need for it. Am I able to cancel this (and pay a cancellation fee) or am I stuck paying it. Same for my TV license.

According to your tenancy agreement, on what date is the rent due?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

The 1st of the month.0

Can't say about the money back- I'd imagine (with no expertise whatsoever) that you could subtract the extra you paid at the beginning form this months, but only if you knew how much it was, and had proof.
I came to post however regarding TV license- yes, that can be cancelled, and they'll give you a partial refund. I don't know if it will be exactly the same proportion of the cost as the amount of time left on it (ie, if you bought it exactly half a year ago, you may well get under half the amount you paid back), but it's still something. If it rains, it rains.

In which case, your notice will expire on 31 August. You can move out before then, but the LL is owed rent until the end of the month - not the date you move out.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

But why is that when my actual tenancy period is the 27th to the 26th? I thought it was one months notice which is a rental period?0 -

Thanks! I pay quarterly so I'm not sure I'll get anything back (just paid it for another quarter!) but I can always ask, nothing to lose

But that's why I asked about the tenancy agreement
So ... what is the rental period stated in the agreement, assuming that's different to the date on which the rent is due.
Is your rent due on 1st of month, to cover the period from the 27th of that month i.e. rent due on 1st July covers the period from 27th July to 26th August?
Possible, but unusual.
More likely, that your rent due on 1st July is for the month of July. When you moved in on 26th of whatever, you paid a few days rent to take you to the end of that month .....?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Yep thats the confusing part. I believe the rent is paid 'per month' as it were, as I did pay a 'top up' amount when I first moved it. However it definitely says my fixed term ends on the 27th of March 2010.
I will say that when I moved OUT of my past property with this company, my tenancy officially ended on the 3rd, but I moved out early so they could get a tenant in before the 1st, and I did get a small refund.0 -
You need to serve notice to align with the rental periods, ie, received by the 26th, NOT the day you pay rent, is my understanding from the many posters on here.
And just ensure that by the time you move out, that you have paid the Landlord enough to over the total number of months you've been there x the monthly rent. I really think that if you've paid him extra, you can subtract that from the last months rent, but you'd need proof that you had indeed paid extra. If it rains, it rains.

I might ask for confirmation in my notice letter. Its been a while so I can't remember. Luckily its only a difference of a couple days rent so not a huge deal overall...
Thats another question I meant to ask. Do I just say 'Hi, I'm leaving on August 26th! See ya!' or do I have to word it specifically like a landlord does? Sorry I've never actually given notice in before as I moved between properties let by the same company and it was all just 'done'
And I'm gonna send it off this week so its gonna be there well in time for the 26th. Plus I have an inspection on the 18th so will hand another copy to the person doing that inspection.0
