Ebay. never had this before

I've recently sold something on Ebay, just a few pounds, & on my listings I always put 'payment within three days by PayPal only'. Never had problem with over 1000 positive feedbacks until now. The auction ended on 1st July. I invoiced the buyer shortly after. As I hadn't received payment by the 6th July I sent a reminder & now, two days later, the buyer has replied to say 'sorry, but I can't pay you until 13th July'. This has never happened to me in the past so is it a case of sitting tight & seeing if she actually pays on 13th July or what do I do?

You can open an unpaid item case on day 4, and the buyer then has 3 days to pay, if they don't they get an unpaid item strike. The downside is that they could get annoyed and leave you poor feedback which is probably why some sellers are reluctant to go the NPB route.
Or you could wait - if a buyer asks me if it's ok to wait for payment I often say yes, as long as they contact me first to let me know.
I have 2 NPB cases to open now - but no contact from buyer on my popular items and they give me no choice!

They might be on holiday and not have their paypal password in the internet cafe or something like that, or perhaps they're waiting to be paid from work, or perhaps it's the day after they pay their credit card, or perhaps ...

I don't think that delaying payment by a week or so is anything major.

    (And they have contacted you.)
  • thanks for your replies. If she had contacted me without me sending a reminder then that would be what I consider to be polite & ok, its no big deal having to wait a few more days for payment. Maybe its just me but when I bid (and she bid with less than 30 seconds to go to end) I always pay within half an hour or so simply because its courteous to the seller & my obligation is to pay for the item I've bid on.

I would be well hacked off at having no contact from the buyer until after the payment was chased. I would be happy to wait for payment in a lot of cases but would expect the buyer to ask first, if they bid in the last few seconds, it could be that they only saw it very late, however at some point they saw your listing & chose not to have the decent courtesy to ask to delay payment for a fortnight.
I personally would open a NPB, if they don't pay after 4 days it closes & you can relist.
Asking for payment within 3 days is pointless as you're unable to do anything if they don't, ebay allow 4 dyas before you can open a NPB & then another 4 days before you can close. I would change the listing to request payment within 4 days.

How would you feel if your employer or anyone owing YOU money took your ridiculous stance?

I could not care less. The auction ended on the 1st and they want the seller to WAIT untill the 13th!!!
Open a NPB,if they dont pay and get a strike,THEY CANNOT LEAVE FEEDBACK.

If someone gives me a firm date, even after an NPB dispute is opened, then I'm happy to wait until that date.

I value the sale more than having to relist it, and it usually doesn't do much good to be a stickler for 'principle'.

Yes, OK, I wouldn't be best pleased, but I wouldn't at this point - given the thirteenth is only four days away - cut off my nose to spite my face.

Fair enough, but under most circumstances you would then have to relist to sell the item and you will probably be waiting until after 13th to get paid.
As above there could be lots of harmless reasons why they couldn't pay straight away.
The seller could contact the buyer and say that he will be opening a dispute just in case there are any more delays, so he can reclaim fees quickly and relist, if the buyer pays on the 13th then they won't get a strike. I don't see the need to be nasty to a potential customer without knowing the reason they were late in paying.

When we had the free BIN listings a month or so back, i had a best offer made on the items but they would not be able to pay for another two weeks as they had to wait for their benefits to be paid. Checked out their feedback and immediately thought Benefit Fraud as they were selling brand new shoes on Ebay, trying to buy cheap and sell on at a profit, or they had a shoe fetish:D

Personally I would wait until the 13th, if they did not pay then start the dispute process. The my listings it would start automatically afetr 4 days of non payment.
