Just to add - phone the community safety department at your local fire station first. We got free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms fitted by them.0

We had a scrape with carbon monoxide poisioning in a student house (we'd all had what we believed to be flu, thankfully the annual inspection came when it did) - the previous tenants had tried to cut heating bills by putting a chunk of loft insulation in front of the boiler flue... the guy doing the gas inspection went white when he saw the state of things. His view was another few days and we'd have been toast, it was only the fact the house was in such a diabolical state that the doors were so warped they were curved like a banana so didn't shut properly that had kept the ventillation going to a level where we were still in the land of the living.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0

We did some research about carbon monoxide detectors a few months ago after hearing some horror stories. We have a solid fuel burner, bottled gas for the stove and the boiler to think about. We were more worried because we have just had a new baby but I guess that just focuses the mind on what you should already be thinking about anyway.
We looked at dozens of sites and loads of reviews and it seems that quite a lot of these detectors are cheap units made in China and there seems to be a fairly high failure rate. It's pretty difficult to verify the presence of carbon monoxide as you can't see or smell it and my wife has a bit of a nervous disposition so I didn't want to get anything that would give false alarms. Eventually we found that Aico make these alarms in Ireland and they come well recommended so we got ourselves one from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aico-EI208-Carbon-Monoxide-Detector/dp/B008G1H3WI.
Seems like a nice alarm and you don't have to fix it to the wall so we can take it from room to room so we don't have to have several of them. Its nice to have peace of mind.0
