Plea to all you lovely people...

If you can scrape together £15 or so could everyone please make sure you get a carbon monoxide detector for your home. My sister's went off the other day, and had it not been there and the gas capped off and boiler repaired goodness knows what could have happened.

Landlords currently have no obligation to provide these, but maybe mention to them that you would like one. If not just buy one for yourself (and take it with you if/when you move)

The little sticker things are not as good as the alarms as there's nothing to hear if you are sleep.

Hopefully you all have one already, but I just wanted to reinforce the message.

Agreed - and also, if you have student children moving into rented houses this September then buy them a Carbon Monoxide detector. It's £15 to £20 that could save a lot of lives.

A few years ago my partner and were poisoned by a faulty boiler in a rented house. We recovered but we were very, very lucky and now I wouldn't be without an alarm.
  • Also a good idea to take one on holiday too.

Very good advice and glad all OK with your sister and family.

I would also like to reinforce installed smoke alarms and a regular check to make sure batteries are still working.

The H.Assn come round every year to do a safety check on the gas boiler. I'm guessing this is the kind of thing they would be checking for?

Yes. In regards to the holiday thing, there have a been a few people who've died not just from boilers, but from bbq's too.

BBQ's give off carbon monoxide too, the deaths have occurred not just from people putting their BBQ's into their tents, but even if they're in the vicinity.

Make sure the BBQ isn't even close to your tent. It has killed a lot of campers and there have been several alone this year, including the death of a 6 year old child and the latest (I think) was a 14 year old girl. Be aware and spread the word.

Where are you meant to fit these? (The alarms I mean, not the card ones that chance colour)

Mine is near the ceiling in my bedroom, as that's where the boiler is.

They tend to have instructions on fitting / location with them.

They do but remember this is only at a point in time, if anything happened in the other 364 days then this is where the alarm comes into play.

Our boiler is a back boiler, which is behind the fire in the dining room, so I suppose we could put it on the wall, just up and further along from the fire, next to the light switch so it doesn't look out of place in the middle of the wall?

Just looking at getting one on Amazon thanks to this thread :)

  • For some reason I can't quote, but Shellsuit you probably don't even need to put on the wall, I think just somewhere in the dining room (behind a photo on the mantelpiece?) should be fine.

So pleased that you are getting one :)
