If you don't quote and then don't get asked to quote for other work why would you be bothered? If you don't want to work for them then on one job then why would you want to work on another. Plus I would imagine if you have quoted an inflated price and they have accepted it then they would still be less likely to recommend you to friends and friends would be put off by the fact that you had charged over the odds.

You're not a tradesman are you?

Obviously not, which is why I am trying to work out why and how they do what they do.

    .

I think your confusing quoting higher than usual due to no wanting a certain type of work with rip-off chancers who charge £2k for replacing a few broken tiles.

    No, Im not.

    yes

On the basis that most people will turn it down but if the odd person wants to pay then that's OK and it's win win?

No they don't turn it down generally as stated before even when quoting with an added premium its often still cheaper than other quotes depending on if tradesman is a sole trader or large company with high overheads. Yes it can be a "win, win" for both parties, I earn extra and the client gets a job done correctly and is happy having paid less than others may have quoted.

As an example I quoted for some work I didn't want as it was out of my area.I quoted £14k and the other quotes came in at £19k and £27k so the client was happy and I was happy.

If they don't want a job or are too busy to do it why wouldn't they just say they didn't want the job or are too busy to do it.

Or is it an urban myth?

Because believe it or not many clients will ask "well when can you do it?" so its better to quote high and if you get the work then fine.

The above is my opinion and I know that many in the trade do the same. Think that covers all of your OP.

Not read it all but simply of course they do, if it's awkward and hard to estimate they have to edge on the upper side, often were much upper side.
No business will quote a loss leader unintentionally, ;);)

It mattered to me enough to ask the question and I don't think it was an unreasonable one. I certainly wasn't looking to offend anyone and wish I hadn't bothered now.
