Three won't allow you to use a 2G only phone (like the Nokia 100) on their network, the partnership with Orange is for backup only.

You would need a (more expensive) 3G phone to go with Three.

Sorry, when I said 'looks like they'll be the best choice' I meant Orange rather than Three :)
I'd misread the Three results which had looked good last night -- the 'good' part was reported for their partner Orange, not themselves, which I didn't realise till looking again today.

Many thanks, but the thread seems to say it's for smartphones only, which I won't be using; and also they piggyback onto the Vodaphone network? -- Voda reports only an outdoor signal where I am.

Ah I didn't actually read through it properly - mind you if the vodaphone signal isn't any good when you live then its irrelevant!
  • Get yourself a Nokia 100 from here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/nokia-100-black-for-only-1p-when-top-up-10-free-delivery-from-mobiles-co-uk-1261448

    1p + the £10 topup on Vodafone.

Will be ideal for what you need. Once all the credit has been used up on Vodafone, get yourself a GiffGaff sim from http://giffgaff.com/ as their pay and go rates are pretty good.

I sometimes wish I never got myself a mobile! nothing but trouble.

Great deal, but Vodaphone only reports an outdoor signal where I am :(
It's looking like Orange has the best coverage for here.

I wonder how many users secretly feel that -- can't be without them for one reason or another, but actually wish they'd never been invented! :D

Thanks, yes I spotted that on their site: could be useful.

Having no previous mobile experience, what I'm not getting my head around is if I buy an Orange SIM (separately from the phone) with some credit on it, say £10, how do I get to be on one particular PAYG tariff or another?

Unless I'm misunderstanding their PAYG guide, it looks like I have a choice out of one of the 'animal' tariffs. For purely calls and texts it seems Racoon is the best for me, but how do I get to be on that? Is it something I'm asked when I activate the SIM?

Also (really showing my ignorance now!) is it the SIM which contains/dictates my number?

The SIM defines your number. Can't remember what "animal" package you start on, but you can register online and change your animal from there. You can also buy credit online as & when you need some.

They've been around for more than a quarter of a century but still get miss-named. They must almost regret calling themselves Vodafone. :D

OK, thanks... hopefully I'm getting there, and won't need to ask too many more questions! :)
