My dad doesn't have a mobile either, he's not a technophobe by any means (he has an ipad / sky plus box / apple tv), he just claims "he doesn't want anyone disturbing him when he's on the golf course"!

    :rotfl:

Well, your dad and I may both be 'of a certain age'! I can see where he's coming from for being 'constantly contactable'.
Now as far as my PC's concerned, it may as well be permanently attached to the ends of my arms, but a mobile.... nah, never been a 'must have' or 'need to have', but I'm sufficiently persuaded the emergency argument is sensible.

I threw mine at the wife years and years ago after my hundreth "where are you" phone call.
Never had one since and never will..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

What I haven't sorted out yet is the best coverage. A page at Ofcom links to checkers for various networks, but I haven't been able to get the O2 checker to load at all. It's here:
    http://www.o2.co.uk/network
Have a look here. You'll be able to see where the transmitters are for each network.

Think I'm probably a ditto on that! In fact after getting one I'm half-thinking of not telling anyone :D

    The Nokia 100
For a dumb-phone (or whatever you call a mobile phone that's not a smartphone!) I would go for a Nokia every time.

I've always found that Orange have good coverage.

If you want cheap there is a thread on Ovivo which is a new network which has a small upfront cost and then its free. No idea how long it will last but you cant get much cheaper at the moment:

Thanks, that's great. The biggest 'nest' of 4 transmitters more or less all together turns out to be on the other side of the hill from me. A few single ones (not many) are in other directions and not that far away, but I can see from the map how the terrain between them and me may have an effect.

'Dumb-phone' sounds about right for me!
Yes, on the coverage checkers Orange seems to come out best here. I'd thought it was Three, but having looked again I see the notes are split into two between themselves and their partner Orange. For themselves it's 'poor', but 'good' via Orange. Orange's own checker has 'very good' for 2G. Looks like they'll probably be the best choice.

Three won't allow you to use a 2G only phone (like the Nokia 100) on their network, the partnership with Orange is for backup only.

You would need a (more expensive) 3G phone to go with Three.

Many thanks, but the thread seems to say it's for smartphones only, which I won't be using; and also they piggyback onto the Vodaphone network? -- Voda reports only an outdoor signal where I am.
