Looking for a new TV, most do not have phono outputs, my amp does not have a digital input. If I connect from the headphone socket (assuming it's 3.5mm) will this work. Is the level high enough ?.

Yes it will work. It may or may not be high enough level... that depends on the TV/amp combo. But most probably it will be more than sufficient. Some socket may cut the TV speakers - others don't, so do be aware of that.0

Should work just fine, just be careful when you first set-up. Make sure the TV and stereo are turned right down and gradually increase the volume on both.
I have my MP3 player headphone socket connected to the Stereo Aux input and it has worked out nicely so that I don't need to change volume on either, just plug and play.

My only reservation is as you point out you may not get sufficient volume form the headphone socket, plus it is likely to cut the TV speakers.
IME the TV output has been beneficial to counteract some of the bass on a standard (Denon) hifi set up (not surround sound dedicated system).
FWIW When I have used the MP3 jack into the AUX 3.5mm jack on my hifi it is quieter than if I use the USB input from the same device, something to do with Digital Audio Controllers???"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... I have a new Samsung tv and I have the same set up as you propose. Connecting to the headphone socket works fine - no problem with volume. But it does disconnect the tv speakers, so no sound unless I turn on my amp. But the sound via my speakers is far better than the tv alone so no real problem. For 89p it's got to be worth trying ..........0

I use the same lead to connect my MacBook to a compact hi-fi, works fine.
So Norman will also be able to use the lead to connect his computer to the amp.
Could be 89p well-spent.0 -
with recent Sony TVs it is possible to set the "headphone" output either to behave like a "line out" (fixed level does not cut the TV speakers) or "Headphone" (level changes with TV volume and cuts the speakers).
Perhaps your TV does this.
On the Sony TV it is well down in the settings menus.0 -
You can pick up a DAC for £15 and use the TV digital out. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Optical-Coaxial-Toslink-Converter/dp/B0074JZ8ZW0

I would've thought that a headphone out could be too high and cause distortion.
As the previous poster notes, you can get a cheap digital to analogue converted (DAC).0 -
You may find that your headphone socket is configurable. On my Sony it's switchable (via the TV user interface) between headphone and audio out. There are various other settings to do with fixed or variable output, whether you want the level to be controlled by the TV volume control, whether you want the TV speakers to operate at the same time etc.....
Oops, I now see this has been mentioned in an earlier post!Stompa0 -
