    Yes, I meant the maximum level would be more than line-level, as opposed to the earlier comment that it might not be loud enough.

    You could set it to the right level, in which case it would be OK, but there would always be the potential that it might somehow revert to maximum, for example after powering off and on or doing an update. I have had that happen with a computer's audio output.

    As far as controlling volume, the optimal audio solution would be to have a fixed level output and control the listening volume from the amplifier.

    (Actually my Mac's headphone socket also doubles up as a digital output, which I feed to a DAC.)
