Wedding 11/12th July. Bad date?

The reality is that towns are buzzing on the twelfth, shops have high sales, burger stalls etc make lots of money, many hundreds of pounds are collected for charity etc and yes public houses also make some money.
I received much criticism for stating that I would not go to a friends wedding on the twelfth of July, I dont know why I was criticised as I was only being honest. If my friend knew me they would not insult me by inviting me to a wedding on the day of the twelfth. Some have said could I not cancel it for one year but the problem I have with this school of thought is that so many lack tollerance in NI towards the 12th and are seeking to get it banned so I always look at each 12th as my last one.
I have no intention of offending anyone and I hope I havent.0 -
Can we keep the thread on topic please everyone?

Just in case, you think I was criticising, I wasn't, I was genuinely interested to know why you would take the stance you do ... that is your right and your choice. It is not the choice I would make but at least now I (we?) can understand your thought process. The reality is that towns are buzzing on the twelfth, shops have high sales, burger stalls etc make lots of money, many hundreds of pounds are collected for charity etc and yes public houses also make some money.

I feel bad now, I didn't really mean to criticise, but I honestly thought your post was a wind up, as I had no idea that the 12th meant so much to anyone. But you live and learn, and now I know!
As for the chosen venue, I too have been to a wedding at Corrick House and I agree with everyone else that its a great venue, so secluded and private. Well worth the drive from Ballymena!0 -
I am totally serious. I live near the centre of the same town as you Ivan. Firstly, at 8am in the morning, they parade past my house - that does not annoy me - the empty cider bottles being thrown into my garden does - yes, even at 8am in the morning - well you see, most of them have not been to bed after drinking all night at the boney! Then the crowds appear and park their cars across my driveway even through there is a car sitting in it - but my God, who would want to take their car out on the Glorious 12th??
Please do not think I have any problem with the bands or the festivities - I don't - I actually really really like the Kilties, however I admit that I am intolerante of the hangers on!!
Anyway, to the Op, I hope you have a really great day and I wish you all the best for the future. :beer:0 -
this all may be true but at least its only once a year. my husbands granny lives across the road from a football pitch - and every saturday the buses arrive, the cars, the hundreds of people and none of them have any thought for anyone who lives there - they park their cars everywhere blocking people in blah blah blah, the throw their beer bottles/chip wrappers/ rubbish everywhere - pain in !!!!.I am totally serious. but anyway back to op's post - its up to yourself - i would have a quick poll of the proposed guests, check where the 12th is to be - to make sure its not in the village or near the village you intend to get married in and then make yur decision.DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

The complete overstatement of the entire text which might lead those not familiar with the 12th / 13th celebrations to think thats what its like, but specifically
"I cant walk down the street on these days" - really?
"the town is full of drunken louts making !!!!!! of themselves" untrue - any town hosting a demonstration will predominantly be full of people enjoying the day. No doubt there will be the odd lout making an !!!! of themselves, but just as true of a concert or a football match or St Patricks day.
"Everything is closed except pubs" not true - its not as if the country grinds to a halt. Restaurants, filling stations, some supermarkets etc are open. Seaside resorts are open - airports are open if you want to get away that much
It would appear that leo has an axe to grind with ppl parking over his driveway etc, but we are on a public board here where no doubt ppl from the mainland uk and the republic have a look and get an impression of us and what happens here.
And im not being one sided about this - a work collegue of mine when asked by our boss what we all did on St Patricks day said, oh we all go to the pub and get drunk all day. I cringed thinking that guys going to go off the phone thinking we're all drunken louts.
I just dont think leos comments OR those like my collegue help give a true picture of what life is like in northern ireland, and lets be honest it IS a lot better than what it was 10 years ago (except house prices

Intresting how debates seems to start around this date, some people seem to have an almost automatic need to defend and others to attack!
In anycase tolerence/understanding goes along way and thanks again for all the advice. I'll be awaiting the reviews of the venue as and when you all attend!
