When Nigel Slater did his pasty he just rolled the pastry as normal and then put a bowl on it and followed the diameter of the bowl with a knife. If you had a cutter big enough you could use one too.

Hi 7 week wonder congrats on your pasties. When I make them I cut the pastry out with a tea plate. Any left over pastry is brushed with marmite and cut into thin strips, twisted and baked to make snacks.0

7ww I always give it a quarter turn after each rolling and pat the edges back into shape as I turn itIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

7ww when rolling pastry always turn on your floured surface, it will stop it sticking. And yes, if perfect circles are needed, cut round a plate. Otherwise go for the more rustic look!
WCS for some reason I read that as you used your leftover pastry to make socks.0 -
Thanks guys, it sounds like practice, practice and if in doubt use a template! I reckon if I try something most weekends I should be almost proficient by the time my mum comes up at Christmas!
WCS I am drooling at the thought of the marmite snacky things - definitely worth making sure I have some pastry left over to try it.
I'm away to my bed for an early night - I hope everyone sleeps well and Monday isn't too stressful for us all.0 -
7ww - I have a set of these, three different sizes, just pop bit of rolled out pastry in, dollop of filling, egg wash the edge to seal and press together. It crimps the edge and you just take the spare pastry off. Taaadaaah

7ww - theres nowt wrong with a soggy bottom and I have no idea why Paul has such an objection, its all about taste and if they taste good who cares.
My bread rolls have turned out ok, I realised if my mum is going to be here tomorrow I will need to leave food for her and her high cholesterol makes her awkward to feed (although she doesnt take any real care I always feel I should) so have thrown some granary rolls together. Last time they were awful but this time they have turned out ok.0 -
