Oh for those with arthritis / aching nesses have you tried just Vitamin D? I know it can be in cod liver oil but there are other things in this which can conflict with some symptoms. If you have a C0stc0 card or similar you can get a 360 day supply for £3.40 (ish) and the science behind this is very strong. I usually take a one a day dose and a double dose if cold (below 8oC) and same if I am feeling icky / tired / been doing a lot of traveling for work. it is usually lacking in people now as we all cover up and wear sun screen now - lots of cases of adult rickets in the developed world. It can also help with immune problems. As I said the science is quite sound (for once with these things)
Overall i found the cost / benefit analysis to be firmly in the DO IT camp but perhaps each needs to work out if their life requires this, as with all things you cannot make sweeping statements. Also I know depends if you can get the product at a reasonable price. it is worth noting that the RDA for this is being considered and the evidence seems to suggest a tolerance of 5x higher than current levels are in diet!!! Just goes to show a bit of sunshine on the skin can do.
Just a thought feel free to ignore.
I couldn't agree more about the vitamin D! I do think the feel good factor about being in the sunshine on holiday is a lot to do with the sudden increase in production of vitamin D in the body. Lack of it causes all kinds of problems including bone pain and depression in people, especially in the winter months.
I am with you on the lack of it in diet as well, most Americans are lacking in vitamin D and I think its a lot to do with the ''low fat'' diets they were told to follow for so many years. People in Europe do better as they tend to eat things like olive oil and oily fish as well as getting out into the sun and fresh air more every day.
If we get a few days rain, like we have just had..the first thing you see when the sun comes out is loads of cats on the house roof tops sunbathing for all they are worth...sometimes the animals are a lot more sensible than the people.:D“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come. I agree pops, never get the flu jab when you're ill. My grandma always got the flu jab because she had asthma really badly. She was booked in one year to have it but she was feeling poorly. With my grandma being a worry wort she thought she'd best just go and get it. With her frailty I'm sad to say that a few days later we lost her. Her body could not cope with the real flu/cold and the dose that the jab gave her.
My grandma was very old and frail and made her own call to tell a porky about having the flu because she was like that... didn't want to mess anyone around, or make a fuss etc Please, please, please never go for a flu jab if you're already ill. I have been in two minds whether to say this today because I didn't want to put any one off having it. It's as safe as houses and a great, great thing to have in the winter. Read this and go for your jabs as normal (I will be) but just store it in your mind to not have one if you're ill. Remember my grandma was very frail.

My friend in Australia has contacted everyone else on facebook but not me. I'm really upset about it. I'm trying to tell myself that it doesn't matter, that I won't see her again anyway etc but it still hurts. I still feel snubbed.
Best out of it! Are you on or do you use Facebook? I haven't signed up to it yet...I have a Twitter account but hardly use it, what am I going to say and who would I contact? I sometimes look at some celeb sites and talk with them...but not many, my contacts are mainly announcers on radio 4 and a couple of comedians. He also said that for my cough he'd be more inclined to make a honey and lemon mixture as there's no proof cough medicine works.Off to go look into that
My cough bottles are mainly like that...rarely used and often I have to buy new as they go past their their useby date but I like to have a bottle in ready just in case.Mug of lemonade heated, add good tablespoon lemon juice and good table spoon honey mix and drink, works wonders.
I agree with that and if you really need the equivelent of a Lemsip, take your own paracetamols with heated lemonade. Or if you can take it and have some booze you can do a hot toddy"A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

FUDDLE - How is Alfie? The innoculations they give to dogs are to keep them from getting Parvo Virus, Distemper, Leptospirosis, and some other dangerous things for dogs, they also give a nasal drop against Kennel Cough which is extra to pay but very worth doing. The vet will also charge a consultation fee for each visit so be prepared for that. He who knows thinks we pay upwards of £35 for the vaccines and the fee for the vet differs from practise to practise so check with them and find out.
He who knows and I both have the flu vaccine innoculation and have done for some years, it only gives you protection against the predicted strain of flu likely to be most circulating in the community that year. It will have no protection against colds, viruses or anything else other than the particular strain of flu.
BYATT - Sending lots of hugs and strength to both you and BESS and thinking of you too, Cheers Lyn and Docky xxx.0 -
I am on facebook but rue the day I ever signed up. You're not missing anything, unless your friends are more exciting than mine that is. All I see is things like 'is it wine o'clock yet' 'off to soft play today' 'grrrrrr I'm furious'. I don't post any statuses as I don't think I have anything interesting to say... I wish some of my friends (loose term, they only friend me to be nosey I think) would show me the same courtesy :rotfl:
I have twitter but never use it. I don't really have any one I want to follow, even in celeb world.

Cost about 10-20p a bottle, only takes half an hour or so to make. I've just got a new lot brewing on the cooker, mmmm!
Was going to ask for the recipe but Pooky beat me to it! This sounds yum and I also have a MIL (nearly!) with a garden full of the stuff.
PAH - sending healing thoughts to your DD and good wishes to get you through it. Also hope the new living arrangements help.
Fuddle and others with the lurgy - get well soon.
Well I went and did my exam this morning just the nail biting wait for the results - won't be til December though so have a while to go. Think it went ok - was happy with 2 questions but the other one was a bit of a beggar. Going to give the kids easy tea and have bath night tonight then it is most definitely wine o'clock later as my reward. Not sure how long I'll stay awake though as DS woke up for his milk at 6.00 this morning and since my alarm was set for 6.45 to get everything sorted for my Dad who was DS sitting and taking DD to nursery this morning for me so I could get over to Leeds on the train for my exam at 10, it wasn't worth going back to sleep for 15 minutes by the time he'd done.
DD being assessed at nursery by early years to see how she's settling in and whether any other help/equipment would help her and nursery tomorrow - DS and I will hardly have got home before we have to go back out again as she wants to see how DD manages on her own at nursery with her one to one then give me chance to give my input later.
Ok - time to go sort tea and baths - once more unto the breech dear friends!0 -

Thank you, I budgeted £50 for it so we should be ok. Alfie has kept his scrambled egg down and is currently sat guarding the oven [STRIKE]in case[/STRIKE] in the hope that some chicken falls out :rotfl: Think he's getting back to normal.
I'm ill, DD's ill but seeing Alfie fall asleep standing and stumble was not at all nice. So funny. DH keeps ringing to ask how his dog is, not a word about his daughter or his wife :rotfl:

I just bore my "friends" silly with updates and photos of my cats.....cos im a bit daft like that.
I'm in full agreement with the vit D, I don't take it but DH does as he doesn't go outside as much as me. I do drag him into the garden for coffee time most days (weather permitting) but I spent a good hour a day in the frontor back garden/out for a walk etc so get my fair share.
Egg and chips for tea tonight, been craving it all weekend. Even pushing the boat out and having proper oven chips...get me!!"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
Like you Fuddle I sometimes don't say some things in case it is obvious and looks like I am trying to(What's that saying?)"Teaching your Grandmother to suck eggs" and yet someone may not know...I am still always learning...
Facebook seems to be like Twitter just the messages are longer...and with my blog, this forum and now Pinternet I'm not sure I need anything else or have the time...of course we all have other sites that we look over anyhow..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Hope your doggy is OK Byatt. I'm taking Vit D too, was diagnosed as very low with it around the time my arthritis was really bad and I had the knee replacements. Years of working from home and then that year not being able to walk meant I didn't get out much. Nobody has ever asked to re-test it though, despite having been sent for blood tests about 10 times this year. I should have asked the GP today. DH has been taking Berocca which was recommended to him by a pharmacist, and it does seem to have perked him up a bit I must say, if it isn't just coincidental timing. He has been really rundown for weeks and weeks though so it would be quite a coincidence.
My jars of marmalade are popping - somehow that's a very satisfying sound!0
