  • At the mo putting the cooker on heats the house well whilst cooking a meal! Don't want you to think I just randomly switch on cookers! I say the house I mean the down stairs, upstairs has the HW pipes, airing cupboard and towel rail.

I agree with greenbee, on a cold but bright day we use less heating then on a dark and dingy one.
    Put the kettle on. ;)

It all helps, thanks both. Well that's the bio ethanol idea out then, burn in 20 mins is just a no go. I was concerned about ventilation too Lyn.

I'll look into calor gas burning heaters. DH works in tools/plant hire and maybe have links to calor gas reductions. He used to, not sure about his newer job.

Is there anything carbon monoxide related I need to know about calor gas burning indoors?

Lyn cleaned out my cookware cupboard to find room for my pantry stock and found DH's old tupperware bait box... ideal for baking storing ;)

A heated throw? I'll definately look into that :D

    edit: oh yum

price is a bit much but that is only 2 months gas charges for me. A discussion needed with DH, thank you.

Most of the time they don't need to be on full because they have sensors that kick in when it gets damp. Ours is on half to two thirds capacity most of the time and turns itself off and on when needed. And (obvious but I'll say it;)) it's only on when the windows are closed and checked on a regular basis to see if it is full.

Hi FUDDLE-well found for the box and well done clearing the cupboard for your pantry, it makes a lot of sense! We have a calor gas heater that we got before we had the woodburner installed, it cost us £49 - £50 from our local hardware shop. We had to buy the gas bottle but from then on all you pay for is the gas when you get a refill, I haven't a clue on current prices though. They do give out a considerable amount of heat and ours can use 1, 2 or 3 bars of the heater so you can choose how hot you run it. If you go that route, you might like to find an attachable fire guard for it as you have the littlies and Alfie. I think calor gas is pretty safe indoors, MAR would know as she has a calor gas cooker I think. It might be a really good option as you could take it with you when you get your new home, so an investment for the future perhaps? Also, you pay for the gas up front so no bill at the end of it which would help with the budgeting, Cheers Lyn xxx. The stove looks lovely ours is much more the basic model but works well, the heated throw came from E*bay L x.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, 'cos I don't have anything to back it up, but don't these type of heaters increase condensation?

    Hello everyone,

just dropping by to say good morning to you all and hope everyone's ok. Hugs and positive thoughts winging your way if not. Sorry to hear you are feeling so low JKJ but glad we have helped in some small way. You are definitely not alone, please keep reading and posting when you feel up to it.

Can't get my head round much today, week 3 of an unwell household but only mild colds left now so hopefully will be 100% again soon. Boys are quieter than usual and still have snuffles so we are all staying warm and cosy indoors. They made a den today (as they did yesterday, dragging everything off their beds plus all my throws etc) and played for ages this morning and have made lots of pictures to jazz their bedroom up. I love seeing them enjoy simple activities like that though they are watching TV now.

off for a bath now then plan to sit on the sofa (for a change!) and make a dent in the big pile of sewing jobs. Lovely bright day again so another load of washing outside. If anything can lift my spirits, its sunshine.

    happy sunday everyone

Calor gas heaters are HOT and lovely, but you need a safe place for them and you need to keep an eye on the condensation, although when we used one here while we getting a new fire installed, it was fine and hardly any.I have had 2 big beautiful calor gas cookers and love them to bits. No bills fuddle - pay as you go. Price cylinders locally - you get them delivered to the door. Prices seem to vary a lot - there's a thread in here somewhere on it.

You get carbon monoxide/gas alarms on amazon for a tenner, we have one of them. Not sure if a smoke detector works with LPG.

I looked at that stove in the flesh Fuddle and it's not as nice as it is in the pictures, the top has a grill that shows the bottle (bright blue) and the pipe/hose (bright orange) - it just put me off.

The basic heater we got was £55 delivered and at its lowest setting it heated our kitchen to "Blimey it's warm in here" in just under 15 mins. (kitchen/diner is 22ft x19ft so a fair size to heat).

I do have a foldi fire screen around it to stop moggy tails getting to close to the flame.
