Oh, I'm thrilled you're posting. Welcome home
Thank you for the heads up re: grains. I too noticed the wheat is extremely pitiful and a going an abnormal (to me) colour. My store is going to be brimming with carbs then and in the next few weeks too.
As for the winter, well I always prepare as much as I can since being on OS. It's taken me a number of years to just get the basics/cheapest things that needed doing but now I'm a position where it's the last push to get my home warmer. I've been preparing for winter since the spring and got everything we need apart from pj's. I feel content in the knowledge that if it does get bad, we'll cope. I just have to get DH's car kitted for him if he'sin trouble. He'll mock and laugh but he'll have a box in the car whether he likes it or not. One day he might just be greatful.
Great to see you back :j
pops you'll have lovely soft boiled eggs now.0 -

Thanks for the update on weather even if it is not what we would like to hear. A heatwave would be nice or even just some dry and pleasant days where we can eat meals in the garden and get washing dry on the line.
Better to be forewarned and might have another look at approved foods for pasta, rice and flour. Trouble is I always order masses of stuff and have to hide it - but it does get used. DDs get a bit scathing if they think something is a bargain so hide it and only bring out a little at a time. DH still groans when he sees the amount of lentils and bread flour I have in cupboard but not when I make lentil soup and home made rolls.
Nice day here and even although York is flooded we seem all right here so far. DH pointed out that the river Ouse runs into ours so we could still get flooded.
Glad we are further away from the river and uphill. It has just started to rain like mad.
If we are going to get a bad and earlier winter then even more determined on new efficient gas fire etc and stocking up as much as I can. The lined curtains we put up last year at the front door and patio doors helped a lot as did not having to go out in really bad weather.

If you can get to a primarks they do fleece or flannel PJs and cuddly dressing gowns really cheaply. They have nice fleece or fluffy throws as well.
If you make up a box for the car keep checking he has not eaten the cereal bars and drunk the bottled water just because it was there. DH has a habit of telling me proudly "I have eaten that up for you" and is surprised when I am not grateful. He is now getting the idea that leftovers are ingredients for something else or are warmed through so he can enjoy a hot meal next day at lunchtime.
I have lentil soup from yesterday in fridge and might experiment with adding some to mashed potato and lots of flour to make veggie cakes. Defrosting gammon from Lidl (30% cheaper) for tomorrow's lunch with small yorkies, home grown potatoes and carrots, green beans and cabbage cooked with apple and onion.
Will cook spicy chicken thighs while oven is on for anyone who hates gammon and might have enough to make stir fry or chicken and veg pasta in the next day or so."This site is addictive!"

Just watched the local news, who gave all of 2 mins to the weather, it appears we had a month of rain, overnight.
The A35 Devon/Dorset border has had a landslide so problems there.
Hope all those in Dorset are ok as I hear it's moved your way...:(
People are saying they've never seen the rivers this high. There are 2 rivers just down the road from me. All the fields are under water.
However the huge puddle outside my door has gone down. Although the water is still flowing.
I am just so thankful you are ok, I read your post before with my heart in my mouth - you have gone above and beyond the call of duty my friend, I hope the owners appreciate what you have done for their pets, I know I would........
While we were out the heavens opened, knew it was to go to last, but sun is out again, but a few people I know whom I bumped into were not happy as they had planned a BBQ tonight after it being dry so long ( all 10 hrs).
Even though we are at bottom of a rather steep long hill and road becomes a raging torrent so long as heavy rain lasts less than a couple of hours we are ok as oh a good few years ago they actually put in far more drains on the road, I think there was one every half mile before then now they are about every 25ft. Mind you the big holes that dot the landscape at the moment due to the renewal of the gas mains will be helping things as they are taking water that would normally run down pavement into road. I asked how they are managing to work through all the rain and they explained they have actually put a pipe from bottom of holes into the sewer under the road so water is drained away as it lands.
Oh raining again but sun is still shining. Bouncing again really heavy - its that heavy I think it would take less than a couple of hours of this to cause us to flood, road already a torrent and its not even rained 5 mins yet. Phew thankfully after 10 mins its eased off about 90% but my patio is now half under water...........

Sounds like a nice day SmileyT:)
Take a look at the stockroom thread, lots going on there and if you ask quick enough Butterfly Brain is sending a PM to those who want it, with a kind of list of what should be in such a cupboard...I bet I have forgotten something but I don't feel as though I have..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Does anyone know why we're getting this really heavy, violent rain? What is causing it? Where is it coming from? Are the powers that be worried about the effect it will have on produce - and then the knock on effect those things we use that feed off the produce that is getting washed away?
The best I can do is tune into countryfile and hope there's a segment about this weather and the effects on farming.0 -
Blimey, I found you.....Thought I was having a senior moment when I couldn't find the thread.......and senior moments at 39 are quite worrying
I've come to confess my sin, for tonight I have given in and ordered takeaway. I'm not even going to try and defend it.....I've just done it and will enjoy every mouthful of it.
(I'll probably be up all night with hideous indigestion for my sins)
No rain here, this little corner of Kent is still basking in some lovely hot sunny spells, it reached 28 in my garden yesterday afternoon. Really do feel for those of you affected by the horrible stuff...hope you all stay safe."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -

May have to have look myself sometime...and accept adding the cost of a bus ride on...as most on here know I am wearing more clothes, using the charity shop, PJ's(they are brushed cotton I think, nice and warm for winter(I hope)a fleese dressing gown, I have enough shirts to last the rest of my life and found some coats the other night I had forgotten about(and some of Mum's they fit me so I'll use them too)
I will buy another pair of shoes I think(I only have one pair for best)the same trouser wise. I wear those track suit type around the house. I can slouch around when I am on my own and no one is visiting me so...I have 5 thermal vests, five thermal pants and two or three pairs of long johns...never thought I be wearing them:eek:and quite a lot of briefs/y-fronts. My clothes last years, it's probably easier being a fella:p"A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

 Hi, I'm 'Nellie' - May I join your shiny new thread?? I've enjoyed reading some of the previous one.
I'm from Lurkedom where I've been for a few months, previously I was in Didn't Know About This Site and that was a horrid ol'place!
I'm a 30-something SAHM to a lovely (well I would say that) 5yr old Son and a SAHW to a lovely DH too.
I'm originally from the big smoke but we made a decision and moved out to the sticks last year - we were following work and am glad we did! Hubby now works for the NHS, bit of a trek down the motorway and a huge petrol bill every month but cheaper than if we continued to live up in the big smoke.
I've an ickle garden that, apart from being home to slugs & snails, is a playground with a small veggie plot.
Hoping to be able to pick up lots of tips & share my journey as I try to make every penny double it's worth.

I forget the technical terms Fuddle but the weather front has kind become stuck but what we would normally be getting weather wise is over America and what we are getting is from the other side of us and I think they said it's coming from Greenland? The weatherman I heard said it will remain unsettled for at least the next two weeks. He couldn't say what will happen after that...
