Also, found out that the fairy lights cost around 2p per night to run - on par with one tealight and I suspect cheaper than the light bulb? I do like them though. I think I'll put some in my bedroom. I'll look for more sticks to tie when I take Alfie pup out for his walkies :D

I bought a latern yesterday which is bright and works for 200 hours on 4 batteries which cost £2ish so 1p an hour. Then being mad like I am researched how much the 'big' light cost. It was estimated but said about 1p an hour as well so I think your fairy lights are much cheaper and prettier than the big light.

I got the next bus this morning and was shocked that it was £1.70 just to go 2 stops up the road! If I'd got on at that stop and gone on into Edinburgh it would've been £1.40 and about a 40-50 mins journey. How can that be right? And how do they expect people to use public transport when it's so expensive?

(I was running late and had dd with me so I couldn't walk it)

    Rant over......for now:rotfl:

I was in the library and ordered Wartime Farm, and the assistant was saying they'd just got in a load of books on thrifty cooking and wartime cooking. She reckons it's because of the hard times we're in, no joking Einstein:rotfl:I got a book called "Thrifty Tips from the War Years". It's really interesting and explains why things were put on rations etc. It's not indepth and none of the tips are anything more that you'd read here.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrifty-Tips-From-The-Years/dp/0708865283 I don't think it's worth buying but would pass an hour or so if you could borrow it.
Also got the Thrift Gardener which I haven't looked at yet and Kirstie Allsopp Craft which isn't that good.

Hope you're all have a good and productive day

  • I've had a look at my latest bottle of oil and its best before ( not use use by) 2015.
I seem to think you can buy wine bags for home brew that shrink as you use them not letting air in, so I shall have a look for those.
I wonder if you could freeze oil in ice cube bags and pop one open as needed, Mmmm research is called for better warn DH though or I may end up with a very odd gin and tonic!

I purchased a head 7 LED torch in Aldi yesterday reduced from approx £4 to £2.79 but it needs three AAA batteries, I wanted a wind up version but it will do. I'd like a lantern if I could find a decent one...

These last two nights I have had 4 tealights on in my bedroom in lovely coloured glass globes. No electric lights.

Funny we should both talk about our bus service.;)

Same here going to Durham, Darlington, Bishop Auckland even Peterlee is miles away and the journey can last up to an hour. And yet a couple of stops on a route can cost a lot.

I hate to say it as there are nice areas around here but these past few days I have found Durham, Shildon and Durham's shopping area much the same as each other with similar shops so not much point travelling to a different town(and again if you haven't the money to spend...why?)

To be honest I hate to say it but the main shopping areas of these towns look tired, miserable and sad. In fact they are dumps...Durham has the Cathedral and Castle going for it and that brings in tourists but when I was there on Sunday apart from that I could not see anything else going for it.

Many retailers were closed, those that were open were not busy and the only places that were slightly busier were...Tesco's!

They are in 10K of negative equity. Their reasoning is it they're chased for the money if they come back then they will get a bank loans "as it's only 10K". What I have tried to explain over and over again is that the house will be reposessed if they walk away from it and reposessions go for much, much less than market value. There is a good chance they could end up owing 30-40K on their home.

Worried is not the word but yes, I am stepping right back. Their decision and I have given them so much help and advice over debt and bankruptcy too. There's always a way with debt. It didn't have to be like this but they say they are not doing it because of the debt, they're doing it to enrich their lives. I just hope it works for them and they have learned from it and change their ways.

It costs me two quid to get a bus to the station. That's a 15 minute bicycle ride. Buses cost a fortune for what you get. Bicycles all the way...
