I'm still on the hunt for a good war time cookery book. I want to invest in one so it has to be a good one. Any recommendations?

I use atrixo for my hands, non greasy and smells lovely.

I was amazed as I walked through town this morning to see people with lots of shopping bags from a well known department store that has a sale on today. The amount of people sitting in/outside the cafes was astounding too - I seem to be the only one who can't /won't spend £3.95 on a pot of tea (that's not even nice Mr S basic tea!)

Ah well at least I know I'm looking after me and mine.

Got DH a decent funeral shirt for next week, such a shame as he's got suits and shirts all stored away from his office days but he's put on three stone being so immobile and can't fit into any of them. Luckily we looked in a CS before going anywhere else and I paid the grand sum of £2.99 for a shirt that looks as though it's never been worn. He wanted a jacket too but as he'll be in his wheelchair it would all bunch up, I've persuaded him a jumper will suffice.

I had a quidc0 payment in I'd forgotten about and used it to stock up on more cat food, just need to order a sack of parrot food and the winter coal and I'm done.

  • Yes I know, I am a Scot but have moved South :( Problem I have with my medications is that certain tablets lower my blood pressure - diazepam for example, but it's naturally 90/60 so making lower has 'interesting' consequences. Luckily the first time I keeled over I was at the Dr's getting my repeat prescription so they were able to alter the tablets straight away :) It does mean however that I am getting new drugs regularly so can't get any decent supply - my pill bill (;)) is nearly the same as my food bill

MrsL you're always in my corner. No i'll never be on my own going through this which is why I wish Popperwell would take the olive branch and come back so he can get the support he needs when times change.

Does anyone use hand cream? My hands are awfully dry. Is there anything out there that is proven good good for housewife hands and has stood the test of time... without being any more than a couple of £'s?

Seems that things haven't changed with regard to job loss announcements.

Agreed it is getting worse. Dd was on the phone just down, part time but doing many more hours at a very fast and stressful pace. Large gov linked manufacturer but shortage of orders so she is now doing the work of 3 people. She has started getting headaches and mouth ulcers and is so stressed.

Fuddle those people going to Aus in negative equity are living in cloud cuckoo land. Dd and her family were all set to go there and she is a medic professional person but it was all moonshine and they had a reality check and decided that the grass wasn`t greener at all. Your friends will end up as paupers, they need to face up to their situation and emigrating is just running away. Try not to worry though, take a step back, they are adults and people have to learn for themselves

I have a good casserole on the go with several types of reconstituted dehydrated veg. So far so good and I`ll divide in two and put pie tops on each half.

re oil. One of my best time savers is the garlic in olive oil that I froze in containers. It is easy to prise bits with a knife. I had too much garlic last year so whizzed a lot up in a lot of olive oil but I didn`t let it stand around in case of botulism. I still have quite a bit in the freezer and I am thinking that it is quite a good way to get some oil into storage

Ollycob if you are on income-based JSA rather than contribution-based your prescriptions should be free

If not the pre-payment certificate will definitely help.

ETA: just had to post this, it made me smile. Just popped up on my facebook page:

  • Olly if your income is only JSA you don't need to speak to anyone just look at back of prescription and tick the box for on jsa/income support I think it says then sign and date it and hand it in. I think unless you have receipts its to late to claim back for the ones you have already paid for but ask the chemist about that as you should have got them free from when you became unemployed.

Also if you are on certain meds you are entitled to free prescriptions so check if you qualify for when you go back to work.

Nice to meet you by the way.
Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

That's a good idea - i guess you could freeze it in ice cube trays and then bag it rather than prize bits off?
