Here's a recipe from the Dorset Homebrew website for Rice and Raisin wine. It is dead easy to make and makes a nice white wine for not too much outlay.

    Rice and Raisin Wine
    Makes 1 Gallon/ 6 bottles

    2 Ib. Raisins
    2lb Rice
    2lb Sugar
    1 Gallon water
Juice of 1 Orange and 1 Lemon
    General purpose yeast

Dissolve the sugar by bringing to the boil in 1 pint of water.
Allow to cool and pour over the rice and raisins (do not chop or
mince the raisins) in a fermentation bucket.

Then add the lemon and orange juice, plus a further 6 pints of
cool water and stir in the yeast.

Cover and leave in a warm place for fourteen days, stirring daily.

Strain through a muslin into a 1 gallon demijohn, top up with
cooled boiled water, fit an airlock and bung and leave to finish
    fermentation.

The wine is ready for drinking straight away, however if not
drinking within 2 months, add a crushed Campden tablet and
the wine can then be left for up to a year.

    All done :)

Can I store wine in plastic squash bottles? I'd say it will be bottled for a couple of months.

Blimey Fuddle, you certainly don't hang around :rotfl:. I'm not sure about the bottles, I'm sure someone will know :)

  • Hi -FUDDLE have asked He who knows and he says that wine will pick up the flavour from squash bottles, better to use water or lemonade bottles. What you will have to do is to check they are an airtight seal. He says you can do this by putting the wine in, screwing the lid on tight and giving the bottle a squeeze. If the cap lets air or liquid out you don't have air tight and the wine will not keep. If it doesn't you should be OK and the wine will stay good. Hope this helps Cheers Us xxxxx

Spent ages making rolls by hand- just looked in oven and they look awful.

Going to let them cool and hope that they taste better than they look.

Might have to go back to using the breadmaker to make dough and do a bit more experimenting. Think my new gas oven is too effficient and have been turning things down a notch but still not great.

Wish I had not bothered now

Got a free ride to ASDA so managed to replace my broken tealight jar...and also was given a free lunch...lovely to have a meal cooked for me...Mince, dumplings, gravy, broccali, caulifower, potatoes, I'll not come to any harm after that.

I think our Aldi is going to be too small for a town this size and today I found an Aldi better than the one I was in on Sunday and and an Iceland is next door so next time I need to stock up I'll go there. Even the ASDA store was better than the one I was in yesterday...

Just finished off some belly pork with a buttered wholemeal bread bun and some brown sauce...

I love love love rice and raisin wine, will be making some in a few weeks time when we start getting some foraged berries.

I've spent half the afternoon looking for whatever has died in my house, you know that smell of decomposing mouse - Blugh....can't find it though. Went out to cut the grass to clear my nose and the farmer at the back has started muck spreading, he uses a mix of human waste in his fertiliser which is great for the plants but my god the smell is vile, sewage mixed with manure mixed with vomit. I finished the grass quick, got all the doors and windows closed (but it's silly hot here and very muggy) so fans going round the downstairs and smelly candles to try and mask the smell for a while.

Put some more pics on my blog of my patchwork and crochet bits, it's spurred me on to get things finished so I shall be plonking my bum in front of something easy to listen to whilst I crochet away tonight.
