The yeast sachets sold by Dorset Homebrew are 5g, so I guess that's how much but generally I think about a teaspoon is right.

I can't get used to grams although all my soap recipes are in them. A gram means nothing to me just like a cm of snow - I need inches!! What happens to a quarter of sherbet fruits when its grams? I just ask for a quarter in all shops anyway :D

I always ask for a quarter of sweets too, although I did notice it is equivalent to 100g, I refuse to use grams though

Brought up and educated with g/kg but all my baking is done in oz as I use my grandma's Bero book. I have to just guess with the oven temperatures though as they're different too.

    there's roughly 25g in 1oz

(Quote:Morning all. Back at work but it's quiet as the grave here. There are supposed to be 30 of us and so far there are 5. Might be an early dart for me - actually need to buy some cheap ready made curtains, do Primarni sell them? i could nip out in my lunch break (lunch break - that's a laugh usually but could manage it today). I've tried Dune!m, A$da, Mata!an, H0mebase, and they are either horrid or too dear.)
Hi there VJsmum - why not try Ebay? I like (but can't afford!) John Lewis stuff - lovely quality, and sometimes I find just what I want on it. Best if you're not in a rush, as there is obviously a large element of serendipity. Or ... I bought a wondrous huge pair of curtains in my local antique centre last week, lined and interlined and fantastic fabric, and am going to cut them down. I defy any winter draughts to get through them!
HTH and love to all, the cake.
PS Keeping bread fresh and crusty: I use a cotton bag inside a wooden bread bin, which keeps it very well, but I do wash the bag from time to time, and de-crumb very regularly, as it did once go mouldy.
  • Hello everyone, DH gone fishing so DD1 and I haveing a nice quiet day. With the bread crust thingy I believe if you put a bowl of water in the oven when you are baking it makes a very crisp crust. I would think the bread would need to be completely cold before puting it away or the steam would make it soft again in a closed container. Paper bags, do you have a greengrocer near you that uses them? I bet he/she would be willing to sell you some big ones if you asked. I wonder if the wheat the professionals use for flour is of a different type to that available in the domestic field, and that might be what is making a difference in the crust crispness.

Just off to walk the houndicus and take a look at the wild blackberries to see if there are enough ripe for another picking. Cheers Lyn xxx.

Some breads are sprayed with a salt solution prior to baking to harden the crust.
I will have a look in my bread book later.

VJ's mum maybe you should hide your OH's passport next time you go away sounds liek he had a very productive time while he was stuck at home :rotfl:

Just been to the tip and really shouldn't have gone  so many things that could be re-used. Am going to write to the council and suggest they have a recycled goods shop like other tips, am sure it would help the budget and there are loads of staff wandering about to run it! Right away I saw a beautiful wooden chair and pine chest of drawers. Must admit I do get satisfaction from chucking things into the pit there. :D

Got a turkey leg for less than £2 for tonights curry. It cooked up lovely in the sc, bag of mixed hm veg and butter beans from freezer and its will be ready in no time. Worked out well buying a small sack of onions from Mr T and batch frying them for the freezer, havent bought an onion for at least a month, one less thing to shop for.

I used an instant cheese sauce (29p) from Mr A last night and it was really nice. These instant packet mixes are much better than they used to be. Now use the custard and cheese sauce, Shirley Goode uses the parsley sauce granules so they must be better now too. Made mac and cheese (as they say in the USA) with 20p bag of pasta, 29p sauce, whoopsied chicken slices, onion and a sprinkle of cheese and breadcrumbs (old crusty loaf frozen just for crumbs but only 19p) so probably less than a pound for 4 servings. Am using the 500gm bags of grated cheese from Mr A portioned out and frozen as its very good cheese for toasting or sprinkling.

Now off to enjoy the heatwave and potter, must plant some salad leaves. OH came home from fishing with 40 square 6'' plantpots so my mini greenhouses will be nice and neat next year. He also got a mini greenhouse out of the skip at the lake - still in the box, so I have 3 of them and my walk in plastic one for next season.

Vjsmum Ikea have curtains and some are on offer at the moment. I bought red velvet feel ones last week for thirty pounds which are so long I can half them and have two windows for price of one.
