I stayed in a village deep in rural India where the walls of our accommodation were made of mud. There was no power, I was sat in a mosquito net with the laptop on doing some work and I had 5 coils burining away. Through the smoke I could see hundreds of mosquitoes and other funky flying things all attracted to the light. The hum from them was deafening, but in the morning I woke up to a room with the floor covered in dead creatures.
The worst I have ever experienced, yet didn't get bitten once.

They work, without a doubt they work. In fact there are some places where they come in your room as standard (Chitwan, Nepal) but I am told they are carcinogenic

Are you sure it was just the coils that were smoking? :D

It's a funny thing, my Brother in Law said to me the other week "Shall we go to Amsterdam and get stoned for my birthday in November"
I havent done anything like that this century and so it got me thinking - One night, some hashish, perfectly legal...... I'm still thinking about it.

In any case, let me go find a picture for you.........

I bought some of the wrist bands in HK as I got a few nasty bites. Not sure how good they are, the first one only lasted 12 hours. The others are meant to last over 100 hours each. As I'm a mosquito magnet I'm willing to try anything. I've been using the strongest jungle formula but still managed to get 5 bites in one day while in Tokyo (somewhere I didn't think was bad for mozzies!). I've also been using the patches and sticking them on the inside of my clothes. I'm starting to detest the smell of citronella but I've been in Vietnam for a week now and the only bite so far was one getting off the plane when I had no spray or patches on. I have a couple of bottles of Repel that I bought from Amazon that I'm saving for later in my trip as this worked really well for me in Indonesia last year.

If you can get hold of them get the patches. I've never seem them in the UK so maybe you can get them when you arrive. I've been buying boxes of 12 for about a pound. They are about 3cm square and absolutely stink of citronella (oh how miss Est!e Lauder) but they seem to be working with spray.
  • Thanks all really helpful - I always seem to get bitten - I remember once in Egypt I managed to get bitten over 40 times on one leg and probably more on the other (I couldn't be bothered to keep counting) I had spray on and a plug in the room that night, but presume some got stuck in the bedding with me?!
Anyway I will look out the patches and things to burn - and hopefully minimise being eaten!!!

You could be onto a moneyspinner there :) fill your case with patches and sell them on ebay when you get back if you don't think you can get them in this country.
