Mosquito bands - rip off or useful?

Hi All,
Had an email from KGB selling mosquito repellent bands for £2 (I know there is a fairly expensive £4.99 postage charge)
http://www.kgbdeals.co.uk/national/deals/119245/mosquito-bands----eguk---national?utm_source=ym&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ANB2&kigdb=9e374397-46f4-45d4-a91a-7031edc3c4bf
I wondered if anyone has used these or similar and found them useful? Or am I just going to be throwing my money away? I tend to use jungle formula in the evenings on hols but rarely put anything on in the day as I use suncream etc etc so thought this may be a good way of having some protection in the day too.

Never used them. Normally apply Tiger Balm to the bite, which works really well. That was recommended by Thai friends of ours and a small pot lasts ages.As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0

Garbage.
If you are in a jungle then use coils which can be bought locally for pence. In a usual room use the plug in thing.
When out and about wear long trousers and DEET on the arms.0 -

By which I'm pretty sure Mr Wang means the liquid devices or with the little pads NOT the plug in 'Buzzers' which are also garbage.0 -

suggest to anyone they use it on their Hemorrhoids, unless you really don't like them0 -
Yes, mosquito bands are utter rubbish. A strong DEET mix is still the best you can get today. If you find Jungle Formula too irritating, Boots Tropical in the silver/grey tin is IME the next best thing, although there are several other 50% DEET products on the market ant Tesco do an (IIRC) 45% mix that is also pretty cost effective and looks to be good.
If you are somewhere enclosed, a spatial repellant like a coil, plugin or diffuser can also be a big help, as can a chain/pipe smoker and a good few drams.0 -

No, you also get coils of repellent in an incense-like form which you set light to and they burn down over several hours.
Usually dead cheap and surprisingly effective in an enclosed space.
Sandalwood/cedarwood incense sticks are also pretty good and quite pleasant too but don't last as long.0 -

Other sensitive places are not so good either!!!!!!!!!!As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0 -
Fab thanks all - I will save the money for a few holiday drinks!
I have the plug in thingy for the room and will try the boots spray0 -

Yep funnily enough I've just lit one. I just wanted to point out the difference between the 'buzzer' (useless) things and the slow release pad or liquid heaters which do work, I used one in the workshop today to keep those little flies out.0 -

I stayed in a village deep in rural India where the walls of our accommodation were made of mud. There was no power, I was sat in a mosquito net with the laptop on doing some work and I had 5 coils burining away. Through the smoke I could see hundreds of mosquitoes and other funky flying things all attracted to the light. The hum from them was deafening, but in the morning I woke up to a room with the floor covered in dead creatures.
The worst I have ever experienced, yet didn't get bitten once.
They work, without a doubt they work. In fact there are some places where they come in your room as standard (Chitwan, Nepal) but I am told they are carcinogenic :cool:0
