  • :jHi Everyone!

Ive never been to this part of the forum before but i wanted to ask a few questions as i got engaged at the weekend :j:T

We will be having quite a small wedding and nothing too fussy just at a registary office and then at our local village hall. Our budget is very tight so were planning on decorating, catering etc and doing as much of it as we can.

Ive never thought of doing the flowers myself as i assumed it was too difficult but ive watched a few videos and i think with practice i could do a half decent job :rotfl:

We were thinking of having a single orchid in a vase/bowl with crystals for the tables, ive been the large orchids in tesco for £5/£8, we would probably needa bout 8, 9 or 10. There would be my bridal bouquet, 2 bridesmaids, flower girl and then about 6 pin holes. Do i need flowers for the ceremony too?

My main worry is when i would need to make these flowers as i imagine i will be quite stressed and wouldnt really want to do it the day before or the day of. When do you think would be ok to make them?
Ive seen quotes for about £50 for my bouquet, £30 x 2 for bridesmaids and then about £4 x 6 for each pin hole, so im hoping i can do it alot cheaper :)

Is it best to buy the flowers from a local market, florist or supermarket? i have no idea where to look :o

Forgot to ask about purple flowers? Our colour is cadbury purple and white but i dont know what flowers are purple lol

    Sorry for all the questions!
    Thanks everyone :)

Has anyone tried making a bouquet with preserved flowers? I have found preserved roses in ivory and green exactly what I need. I just wondered how easy they are to work with. Thanks!

    Hi,

For our centre pieces we have some tall farily sculptured vases and as such we are looking for something simple and striking to go in them. Yesterday in Hobbycraft I found some 'palm' type leaves £1.99 each and a white orchid - I think they maybe called a butterfly or moth orchid. They were £4.99 each. Each vase needs 2 x leaves and 1 x stem of orchid, plus some foam to hold it in place and something to cover the foam - moss/pebbles/glass nuggets. Does anyone know where I can find these cheaper and of good quality?

we just got married yesterday, and had an amazing day with flowers dresses and all the frills for under 2000. home made wedding. we asked the florist from our local surestart to help with the bouquets. cost for one bridal bouquet and 2 bridesmaids posies was less than 50quid. foam flowers from a floristry warehouse. the dresses were made to measure from china on ebay and cost less than 100. food was a grand medieval buffet . we ordered a suckling pig and whole salmon as centre pieces and cooked everything between us. a family frins borrowed us a posh car, another family friend took photos. all in all we asked everyone to do a little something and together it was amazing. not only was it the fraction of the cost but all our guest felt pleased to do their bit and be a part in making our day so successful. oh and asked for cheques and money as gifts.... so all in all made more in gifts than we spent on our wedding... how about that???

Your wedding sounds absolutely fabulous! Which chinese website did you use for bridesmaid dressses, i heard more horror stories than good!

    Hi,

Has anyone considered using/have used herbs as table centre pieced for your wedding?

I'm getting married in a converted barn, which has quite a rustic feel about it, plus me and my OH want quite a relaxed/laid back feel and not too formal.

We first wanted seasonal (getting married in early May) cottage garden style flowers with vintage vases, but after preliminary research, I think this will be too expensive. Instead I was thinking perhaps making a centrepiece based on herbs - what are your thoughts? - Any ideas on how I could do this?

Also, does anyone know how early lavender flowers?

    Many thanks
    Ohara x

Your wedding sounds simular to ours! For country wedding flowers have you looked at farmers markets?

Herb wise I saw some planted in some silver bake bean tins and then with a check green ribbon round it rustic looking, these might look good if you are having long tables as you could have them in rows, or you can buy silver stainless steel buckets which arnt to big and plant mixed herbs in them if you wanted something bigger and then maybe put a descripion of the meaning of the herbs as I believe herbs use to play a part in medievil weddings, Rosemary is meant to mean something. Sorry for my spelling etc tired and cant spell when i'm tired! Hope that helps alittle.

use the oasis for dried flower generally the brown one. wires that can be threaded through and bent in to shape also help make sure you have a fair bit of foliage as this will help to keep the cost down and make it look fuller check out the link on page one genrally working with dried/silk flowers is similiar to working with fresh except they can be a little more brittle

Yesterday in Hobbycraft I found some 'palm' type leaves £1.99 each and a white orchid - I think they maybe called a butterfly or moth orchid try looking for Phalaenopsis orchids in search engines also try flower markets like covent garden if you are in the London area . They were £4.99 each. Each vase needs 2 x leaves and 1 x stem of orchid, plus some foam to hold it in place and something to cover the foam - moss/pebbles/glass nuggets. Does anyone know where I can find these cheaper and of good quality? depending on how many pebbles you need try garden centres for a large bag of pebbles generally vary from £4.00-£16 for a 25kg bag that covers 1m squared depending on material

again they are cheaper in garden centres and flower markets depending on the time of you wedding you could try growing some from cutting or divisions. http://video.about.com/gardening/dividing-perennials.htm

  • This is so incredibly helpful! Thank you! I have been using pinterest to keep track of bouquets I love and now I just need to figure out what the flowers in them are!!
  • SugarWalsh, are the vases see-through? if not, it won't matter what you use. If you are able to see-through them, have you considered the aquagel beads? I know they won't need the water, but it shouldn't harm them & can look pretty?
