Shortfall dilema

I am new to Ebay and have a dilema. I have sold an item, the buyer has promptly sent a cash payment.

The dilema is that they have sent a note, and not the coinage. Now this may sound a bit petty, we're talking about 50p, but what would you do?

Thanks in advance.

email them, ask them for the 50p, why should you lose out??

if they say they dont want to send coins, say ok, send a £5 note then. i will keep the change.

i once sent coins taped in the inside of a nurofen box in an envelope ! so the postie couldnt feel his 20p bonus !
  • Ask them where the rest of the payment is. You shouldn't be the one that loses out.

Woohoo! I'm normal! Gotta go tell the cat.
  • Maybe they didn't think you'd notice.

If I'm honest I would feel embarrassed to ask for the extra 50p but imagine how you'd feel if you let them off and then for some reason they left you neutral or negative.

If the cost is £10.50 then it's £10.50! Not £10. If they had paid by paypal then I doubt you'd have felt guilty asking for the remaining 50p ;) And if you were getting your change in Tesco and you noticed 50p missing would you not ask for it? :) I would! That's a small bunch of banana's!!

  • Nodding in agreement at 50p missing from change in Tesco's. Good point!
  • Depending on the item if you offered to send first class then you could always send second. Although i'd be cautious - they obviously think they're a law unto themselves.

I haven't been on ebay for a while until recently when I sold a few items. One thing that I noticed is that there are a lot of people out there who try to mess you about. All my sales have been Paypal only but I received a few messages from people wanting to pay by cheque. One even won an item and then asked me if I accepted cheques!

The result of this is that I don't trust anyone who doesn't do things by the book on ebay. If somebody short changes you then don't send out the item until they have paid in full. Remember that they may have outbid somebody else by that 50p they forget to send.

Thank you all for your responses. You won't be surprised to hear that I would go back to a supermarket and complain about 1p difference on principle of their huge profits (always check the receipt in the car!!!!!)

Technically speaking, winning a bid is entering into a contract and therefore binding. Down classing the postage would minimise the loss, and using the second chance winner would put me in the same position as not chasing the 50p. It is the principle more than anything else.

    Thanks again to everyone.

Depends what you've sold. Sometimes I when I have had similar problems I have just downgraded the postage to 2nd class to make up the difference. If that would cover it, then it's by far the easiest solution.

EDIT: I see someone's already suggested this... so I would also suggest that you definitely mention the shortfall in your feedback

Ask them to send you stamps to make up the difference if they don't want to send coins. Some people have a right cheek!
