combining hand luggage weight?

i dont know the answer to that but i was definitely told we could mix and match cabin/hold baggage.

We recently flew with hand luggage only with Thomsons - even though we had hold luggage of 20kg each booked
Our hand luggage was a little over but they let it go, although they said nothing over 5kg was allowed in the cabin and we should really put it in the hold

Bottom line was, we couldn't use any of our hold baggage allowance for hand luggage

i think thomsons need to get their act together and give everyone the same advice.
i am not going away again till early next year but will see what happens then regarding hand luggage.
