Just packing, and have weighed all of the 5 suitcases and just popped on to see if it mattered that one was 12 and one was 17, as been faffing about moving sandles for the last hour. Have got all just under 15kg but relieved can be weighed together, as still have toothbrushes to shove in!
We have all got our own hand luggage, with all sorts of random items inside. Thank goodness don't have to do this on the way home, as all the suncream, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel etc etc is gone. Just a few bottles to bring back!

Thanks everyone, as knew someone would have asked the question and that there would be helpful replies. x

We have never had hand luggage weighed, although there is always a first time - we flew out to cyprus with Thomson in April and our youngest had a rucksack filled with revision books, must have weighed well over 5kg, i told him to act as though it was full of feathers at check in, anyway no one even asked - be interested to know how much each KG costs the airlines to transport given that the baggage allowance is usually between 15 - 20kg no matter how far the distance traveled!!

With Thomson if you book a platinum hotel you do get 20kg per person hold baggage.
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

Thomson have only recently reduced their hold luggage to 15kgs, so it depends when you booked. If you booked a few months ago you will be entitled to 20kgs, if you booked a few days ago it will be 15kgs. You need to check your tickets/confirmation email to get the correct allowance.

I'm really surprised at that!

So why don't they say " your total baggage allowance is (say) 20 kilos which you can use as you wish between hold and cabin"?
I know that it would be impossible to do (imagine somebody trying to put a 20kg suitcase into the overhead locker) but you know what I mean.

I'm not disputing that that's what you were told but it does go against what the Thomson website say:

Some airlines let you put up to 23kg on board, so i guess it coud happen! And doesnt Ryan Air say you can take as much as you like as long as its within the size - so youd have to have a case of bricks!

my comment was in reply to jhe who said this - specifically about Thomson:

thomson travel agent told me even without upgraded luggage allowance it is possible to use less hold weight baggage and more cabin baggage and vice versa

So say Thomson cabin limit is 5kg and hold is 20kg.
The above quote seems to say that I could potentially take 15kg in the hold and 10 kg in the cabin.

I can't get my head round it and I'm not sure it's right.

My point in my post was if you can mix-and-match hold & cabin baggage weights why specify a maximum of 5kg hand luggage on their website?

i dont know the answer to that but i was definitely told we could mix and match cabin/hold baggage.
there are size restrictions to cabin baggage but as i mentioned earlier my back pack i carry is slightly larger than the size they mention, i have never had a problem but i am usually within the weight.
having just booked another thomson holiday at a different travel agents to my usual shop, i mentioned the cabin/hold baggage and said i was surprised, i never knew in all my years of flying with them that this was allowed, she replied neither did she but she had just came back from mexico and did the exact same thing
