Dixons at Stansted Airport had the macbook for cheaper than the Apple store when I travelled last week -I don't recall the exact discount but cheaper than £749. However they sell you a 1 yr C&R warranty and claim it's not EU wide, unless you buy their store warranty. Need to check with Apple if their 1 yr warranty isn't intl as think it used to be on laptops but not desktops (may have changed). Try it out at an Apple store as the keyboard is very different and you may find it annoying.
Avoid DSG warranty at all costs. You should get 12 months as standard from Apple, plus getting AppleCare is a good idea. Along with the warranty Richer Sounds do it's probably the only one that's worth it (especially for laptops).0 -
If you qualify for edu discount the prices are as follows:
MacBook 2.0GHz White: £826.03
MacBook 2.0GHz Black: £938.83
MacBook Pro 15" 2.16GHz: £1240.80
MacBook Pro 15" 2.33GHz: £1562.75
MacBook Pro 17" 2.33GHz: £1747.23
If you qualify for Higher Education discount (only available through a uni network ie. you need to be a registered student to get on to it)
MacBook 2.0GHz White: £755.53
MacBook 2.0GHz Black: £858.93
MacBook Pro 15" 2.16GHz: £1146.80
MacBook Pro 15" 2.33GHz: £1444.08
MacBook Pro 17" 2.33GHz: £1614.45
I've ignored the 1.83GHz white MacBook as it only has a combo (CD-RW) drive not a SuperDrive (DVD).
The white MacBook offers most "bang for the buck".
If you're serious about CS3 (don't get CS2 it's the PPC version - the old chips, as opposed to the newer Intel chips - and runs like a dog under Rosetta) then an MBP is the better option.
If you can hang on a bit then OSX 10.5 Leopard should be available by June (no-one really knows - Apple never tell). This will save you "upgrade envy"
Whatever you do buy more RAM, and not from Apple. Crucial are usually the cheapest and max out the machine. Note that the max RAM for a MacBook is 2GB and 3GB for an MBP.
Have a look here for a good Mac forum that will be able to give you plenty of advice.0 -
Don't forget you can get cashback from Quidco on purchases at Apple store, including the education store. I got £62.59 back from buying a macbook and airport base station.0

I got edu discount. I do work in a college but wasn't asked any questions about it. It could be worth a try if you feel like chancing your luck. Just give the name of a local college. It's certainly worth it when it comes to getting Applecare £50 as opposed to £200.
Get 2gig of memory though.

Dunno if this is of any use to you, SS, but you can get 4 Nectar points for every £1 you spend at Apple Store until 31 March '07 - http://www.nectar.com/dynamic/estores/retailer/applestoregb0

On another thread someone posted that surprisingly, given what they are used for, the macbooks have a very ordinary graphics card.
You could order one online as I was told by their sales guy that you can load any office software and use the mac when it arrives and if you change your mind you can send it back within 10 working days of receipt. Can't send software back though. I would suggest that you check the website T&Cs and get it confirmed in writing as the T&Cs say 14 days.
Salesman I had refused to confirm any returns policy in writing, which may be of concern. He suggested as posted above that the white mid range is the best value for money. I tried the black one at Stansted and it leaves fingerprint marks on even the slightest touch.0 -
we got an ex demo imac in the last KRCS sale - absolutely spotless and works a treat - we're going to look for a macbook for SO the next sale round.
I have to work with PC's but for myself glad I changed - and enough open source apps for what i need tp cross platform

Another tip if any of you are interested:
When I got my macbook, I contacted NTL/Virgin about getting a wireless router. They said that if I sent in a receipt for the router, they'd credit £50 to my phone/broadband account.
I got an Airport base station to go with my macbook, sent in a copy of the invoice and have been credited with £50 as promised.
Also, one of the plug sockets with the Airport arrived damaged. For some reason, the laptop is sent with 2 plugs in the box, so I already had a spare. I called Apple to ask for a replacement, they said 'sorry, we can't do that.' Rather than send the router back, they offered to refund £15.
I'm well chuffed, and I love my macbook too. I hope it lasts as well as my old Imac, which has gone into the kids' room after 7 years trouble-free use.0 -

I just tested this and for me it came through as about 30 quid off the price. Did you go through your college's network?0
