An idiot in Tesco once asked for my ID when I was trying to buy a bottle of wine. Fair enough, I have no objection to that... showed him my driving licence... he then refused to sell me the wine as "you are under 21 and it is against the law". Er... it's 18!! I politely pointed this out (I was 20 at the time) and he started to change the story and finally refused to sell it to me "because you are obviously buying it for the children outside and I will get into trouble for that". No, the chavs outside (who I'd never met nor spoken to) would not be drinking the nice bottle of wine I was buying!! I was fuming but there wasn't anything I could do. Don't know what his problem was.

By law.... if you want to go back to work and you've previously been 'signed off' you have to get a doctor to sign you back on.

    That one REALLY annoys me!

The one that really annoys me is "By law he/ she is my common law husband/wife.." I think the situation may be different in Scotland, which is no doubt why the confusion arises, but in England and Wales there is no such think as a common law wife... It makes me quite irrationally irrate, for some reason.

My birth certificate is my legal fiction, and you can't force me to pay council tax, you can only force my birth certificate to pay council tax, and this court is operating under Admiralty Law.

"By law, shops must accept 1 & 2p pieces" (sometimes stated that they must accept up to £2.00 worth).

(Actually by law, shops can accept any method and format of payment they like - including or excluding small change. Heck, they can even insist on payment in bushels of apples, if they so wish, and don't have to serve/accept payment from anybody)

"By law, Scottish/Northern Irish notes are legal tender"

(Actually by law, they are not legal tender at all - legal tender being a specific and somewhat obscure definition, that has nothing to do with the acceptability of non-Bank of England notes)

BY law you can beat your wife with a think stick aslong as it doesn't leave a mark....

err ok no wonder i broke up with you, to be fair he was a lovely man (who never beat me with a stick or otherwise and was so scrawny he's had lost the fight lol) just was abit of a know it all.

    This is a grey area.

There's an urban myth that it used to be the law. In the olden days, men were allowed to beat women with a stick no thicker than their thumb, hence the term 'rule of thumb'. The belief is now thought to be incorrect, but it's no wonder people believe it.

ETA, my dad used to firmly believe that it was illegal for a man to beat his wife on a Thursday. Though he never did so (he would've come worse off in any fight!), a running joke in our house was "be careful, it's not Thursday!!" ;)

This one is from a neighbour:

It is against the law to let your cat poop on his private property.

One that regularly comes up on these boards.

By Law, you can not open somebody elses mail.

Well actually you can, as long as you do not intend any harm by doing so. Well, that is how I understand it anyway.

Also another one I used to hear all the time (retail manager) By Law you have to sell it to me.

    I await the arguments :-)
