"By law, ....."

What is the biggest load of claptrap you've ever heard someone say, starting with the words "By law,....."?

Tesco recently wouldn't sell me non-alcoholic beer (clearly labelled as such!) a late evening, because "it was against the law in this country"

My ex MIL is best for this.

By law, BT have to give her a phone line for free.
By law, the shop has to let her off when she is 30p short.
By law, the council have to replace her carpet.

If anything goes wrong, or not to her liking, she would put "by law" in front of the sentence.

So "By Law", I no longer have to speak to her!

The most idiotic law i heard was :

King Charles II decreed Cavalier King Charles Spaniels be allowed in all public places including Parliament; there's no record of this being revoked.

Right, i'll take mine to the public pool and insist they take a dip..... as fast as we get in, the place will empty i'm sure.

By law, a pregnant woman has the right to use any toilet anywhere/any toilet in a place open to the public.

This one is trotted out again and again and is based on a misunderstanding of the legislation, which actually says that a pregnant woman can't be prosecuted for urinating in a public place under public decency laws.

Once saw a woman argue violently that she should be admitted to a facility for vulnerable disabled children to use the loo because she said she was pregnant though had no visible bump. There was a public leisure centre with toilets in the building next door and she was rightly refused access on child protection grounds and went off shouting and swearing about her legal rights being infringed

The non-alcoholic beer is pretty handy - some people are pregnant and/or need to drive home - and appreciate that tap water and/or kids pop isn't the only drink on offer :D
