Oh and I just bought it :o
I do hope that once you have got your confidence up by running on the treadmill that you try outdoors(perhaps in the summer). I know you are worried about your joints but I don't see how the treadmill will eliminate this problem and in any case this will only really affect you if you do many miles of running per week. I know of many people who have used treadmills as well as run outdoors and all of them say that it is easier on the treadmills and that they find they were slower than they thought when they are on the road. Treadmills(motorised ones) help you run so you don't run in a natural manner and being indors I bet you will sweat buckets.
I run for fitness and like to incorporate hills into my runs, treadmills have inclines but again my friends tell me that it is just not the same. Unlike me I am guessing you want to jog for fitness as well as losing weight. When I first started off I had the same motivation but then I found out that a pound of fat equals 3500l kcals and that it takes about a mile to burn off 100 kcals. This means to lose a pound of fat I would have to run around 35 miles!!!! No chance of that happening as I don't have the time to run that many miles so I keep control of my weight by diet. If you had a choice of not eating a pack of crisps or running 2 miles which would you find easier to do?
Anyway do try running outdoors. It will be harder after you get used to the treadmill but it is more interesting and you will be less likely to give it up.

Thanks for your reply.... interesting. I am used to running on a treadmill and do approx 6k a day. I want to run for fitness and quite enjoy it (wow did I say that). After getting back into the swing of things (I have had three months off running due to an injury, although not related to running) I may just try road running after a while....once in a while. I would find it better tohave someone so run with but friends and work mates do it for a while and then give up!!!!

And just to add at 6stone 3lb I am not running to loose weight!!!!! (I am only 4ft 10 so it isn't skinny!!!) also I don't eat crisps so I will jsut run the mile anyhow!!!! :D
