Apply for a current account with N&P or Metrobank and leave the cards dormant in a drawer somewhere ready for your next trip abroad (with N&P, set up standing orders to fulfil the minimum account requirements) - then no more faffing around with comparing rates, analysing ATM withdrawal costs etc. etc.
Or just do the same with a Clarity, Post Office, Nationwide Select or Aqua credit card if you are able to.
Shut up Callum you bell end.
I save an absolute fortune using Fair FX and have done for years.0 -
putting aside the apparnant 'trolling' between members, where is the 2.5% charged? when i load it up?
i also chose the caxton card as the atm withdraws are free.
i'll prob load the card up with £1200 in total over the 11 days. say 3 £400 loads. so price of 3 texts, and maybe a txt at the end of every 2 days to find the balance. (the other cards u needed the internet to check).
i'll prob take £200 out every other day from a atm and pay for all the meals on it.
am i still going to be worse off tha the 1.49% card you sponser?!
cheers
I think that TakeThis was perhaps comparing the Caxton Global Traveller which loads sterling with currency conversion at 2.5% less than the interbank rate and the Travelex Global also loads sterling, gives you the interbank exchange rate and charges 1.49% on each transaction.
I'm assuming that you have got yourself a Caxton Euro Traveller which you load in euros at a predefined rate which Caxton sets... this varies from day to day... for example today the Caxton rate is only 1.8% less than the Mastercard rate.
Undoubtedly Travelex Global will give you a few extra euros for your money but there may be other factors that are important. I like yourself tend to top up a few times while away so I would like to be able to do this online with various debit cards (don't know if this is possible with the Travelex). Also I would like to find out if there are any issues using the Travelex since there is no name on the card (I use my FairFX for online payments occasionally).0 -
Using settlement on the 7th as a benchmark, CaxtonFx Euro gave you 1.225, a good rate.
Cash Passport Globe, 1.2318...a better rate and if you include the cashback given with the initial topup, an equivalent of 1.2381.
Kalixa though, would have given you as much as 1.250 on purchases. Especially worthwhile if you get the card fee back using TopCashBack.
What some may forget with Foreign currency cards is that they have to pay to convert their money back to Pounds if they have any left over cash that they want to spend.0 -
There is no 'trolling' here, don't be obtuse.
People discuss what they know and perhaps learn something new.
You were told which was the best, but you ignored the advice and went your own way. That's fine, but to ask whether using card that charges 2.5% will leave you worse off than a card that charges 1.49% is just incredible.
That like asking if something costing £2.50 costs more than something costing £1.49.
Perhaps you are the Troll.
The Caxton card and the SMS system obviously suits you, so stick with it.
But the best value for money and the quickest to obtain was the one that I mentioned.
im not asking whats the difference between something costing 2.5% or 1.49%, im asking with the way im using my card would i still be better off with the 1.49% card?
if i withdraw money from a ATM 5 times in the 11 days i'll be charged 7.50euro at 1.50euro a time. and then theres the hassle of finding somewhere to go online to top the 1.49% card up?
if you work out the sums and i WOULD still have been better off then the 2.5% card then im a muppett whos been took in by the 'free withdraws' and full credit to caxtons marketing!!
and heres your trolling:Shut up Callum you bell end.0 -

Where did this €1.50 charge come from? The TravelEx Cash Passport Globe has no charge for using overseas ATMs. The only thing you pay is a 1.49% loading on the exchange rate - which is the lowest on the market for cards that don't charge separately for ATM withdrawals. Maybe you misunderstood the charges and made a non-optimal choice for that reason.
Anyway, even if you haven't chosen the cheapest option I don't think it's going to be too bad a choice. You'll probably end up paying £10-£20 more than if you had gone with the TravelEx card.
I definitely agree with the point that if you travel frequently, it's well worth getting a fee-free debit card, as in the long run these will save you quite a bit over even the cheapest prepaid cards.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

The only problem with the Travelex Globe Card is the inflexibility loading it.
By phone + debit card its a painful slow process. You have to go through a multitude of options and then have to verbally repeat them all to an operator.
Ive yet to do it under 20 minutes. The money does show normally within 10 minutes.
You can do it via your online bank via bank transfer but this depending on how quickly your bank send the money, can take up to 5 working days, but at least 24 hours0 -

In my experience it takes 3-4 hours for a Faster Payments transfer to reach the Globe card. However, there's no guaranteed timescale.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

Good information thanks. Any issues relating to lack of a name on the card. For example, is it possible to use online for payments if you can't fill in the name field? Has anyone had it refused by a retailer because it didn't look right to them without a name?0
