how do you check your banding?

Start by checking the value of your house when Council Tax bands were set in 1991. Don't worry if your house wasn't built then - the same rules apply

Go to the House Price Checker

    http://www.nationwide.co.uk/hpi/

    Valuation 1 - Enter 2006 Q4
    Valuation 2 - Enter 1991 Q2

This will tell you the value of your house back in 1991

Then check the Coucil Bands about halfway down this page

    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1160141972,18232,

If you have been banded incorrectly you can reclaim via:

    https://www.voa.gov.uk

    Good Luck!

Does this apply to houses in Wales, as all house prices were re-assessed 2 or 3 years back? I have just tried to see if I am in the right banding, but they say they can't find my property  does it mean I don't have to pay :rotfl: - Ours went up by £3 per month, in Band D.

    We're up 4.9% as well!

Just checked and we are in the right band, not surprising really as we bought a new house in 1992.

    Yet another rise.
    Band B - up 4% on last year £101 per month !!
  • Our UK house is in Band A. My son and the lodgers are jointly and severally liable for the CT as they live in the house.

Haven't seen the bill yet as I have to wait for it to go online (as I'm in Spain). My son says the instalments are £60 a month but that includes some Council Tax Benefit, so I don't yet know what the gross amount is, nor the Benefit, forgot to ask him.

I can't judge it by last year as there was some sorting out to do and we had to pay it off in four months

I was just interested in what the payments were per month!

Edited to add: Just found it online, it has gone up 4.8%, (a rise of £3.66 pcm or £4.13 over ten months) and Band A is £898.90 per annum.

Gone up 4.2% here - £1758.63, or £1318.97 with 25% discount. Up £5 for me and you pay over 12 months, not 10 like most of them.

I'm in Band E, though some neighbours are in Band D and slightly bigger plots/houses (all differing styles) and others in Band E. Hmm..judging by the checks I've followed (thanks for the links) I should be Band D. I'll be phoning VOA tomorrow! 5 years difference in back-tax would be nice!
    Back on the DFW Wagon:

    CC - £3,300 on 0% til 04/2020
    CC - £4,500 on 0% til 02/2019
    Loan - £12,063.84 as at 4/1/18

£1035 for us. Up £57 on last year. No idea of the percentage though. Grrrr
So you were on £978 before. That's 5.8% increase!

    Haven't had my letter yet.
