Internet Explorer 8 error messages

I don't know why, but over the past few weeks I've been getting more and more 'Internet Explorer cannot display the web page' error messages using IE8 (Win XP).

This usually occurs when using a link from a website that takes you through to another part of the same website or linking to another website, e.g. linking from Flight bookings to car hire on the BA website, or linking from my Top Cash Back account to a retailer website.

If I use Chrome on the same websites I don't get this problem.

I have done all the latest updates and virus scans.

Can anyone suggest what may be causing this and offer a solution?

Try it in no add-ons mode to see if an add-on is causing problems.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have tried disabling all add-ons but the problem persists.

Yes, I know that I have the option of using Chrome but old habits die hard and I'm more comfortable finding my way around IE8!

The first simplest thing to do when you have probs with IE8 is to reset to factory settings - goto tools/Internet options/Advanced and then click on reset - amazing how it gets rid of all the crud etc. You may need to look at the add=on options afterwards as they are likely to be reset, just make sure yr Avast add-ons are enabled.

If you do have malware then someone will make some further suggestions...........

Yes, I have tried resetting with no avail. Have also uninstalled IE8 completely then downloaded again using Microsoft updates but the problem persists. Most confusing!

Pity....If the HJT log doesn't give any clues, then we may need to look for something else. Are you using laptop with wifi by any chance? If so try connecting with an ethernet cable, if it improves, then it might be due to a weak signal, or neighbours using the same channel. Just suggesting this in case we have to look at a different tack....

No - using a desktop PC connected via ethernet cable.

Okay, at least we are eliminating options - had a quick look at your HJT log, just a quick view mind you, the one thing that hit me was what a lot you have active - could you also tell us how much RAM you have and also look at the Windows Task Manager (ctl alt del) hit on performance tab and tell us the (i) processes active (ii) commit charge figures. If I'm right you may well need to look at the sticky above on how to speed up a slow or infected PC.

Just guessing but your PC could be suffereing from indegestion?
