Immediately after posting the above IE8 crashed. Outlook Express stopped working, general fallover of everything!

Rebooted and all appears OK - but for how long?

One last scan to rule out malware - It shouldn't take long.

Run aswMBR as below & post that log. Download it from the link below and save it to your desktop.

When you've downloaded it...

• Double click aswMBR.exe to run it.
• If prompted, click YES to scan with Avast! virus definitions.
• Ensure the AVscan is set to Quick Scan & click the Scan button.

• After the scan reports "Scan finished successfully", click Save log & save the log to your desktop.

May just be coincidence but these majot problems only started this afternoon following an avast program update.

But I thought you said earlier that it started this afternoon after an Avast update?

Hence it would be logical to restore prior to when the issue first occurred, to undo the last event, ie without Avast active (which you could also do via Safemode, or via selective use of MSConfig, or via an uninstall)

I leave it to you to decide.

I've been having the IE8 problems for about a month.

The major issues started this afternoon - after I had originally posted my cry for help!

I tried a system restore to a couple of days ago when the major problems started to happen but this didn't help.

Sorry if I sound confused - it's because I am!

Although I can find my way around the computer and can follow instructions of what to do, I don't know what to do for myself - hope this makes sense.

An update:

I have reinstalled Win XP from disk - interestingly no version of IE installed during this process so I downloaded a fresh copy from the Microsoft website. All updates done via Microsoft update.

All now seems to be working fine, let's see how it goes.
