Okay, at least we are eliminating options - had a quick look at your HJT log, just a quick view mind you, the one thing that hit me was what a lot you have active - could you also tell us how much RAM you have and also look at the Windows Task Manager (ctl alt del) hit on performance tab and tell us the (i) processes active (ii) commit charge figures. If I'm right you may well need to look at the sticky above on how to speed up a slow or infected PC.
Just guessing but your PC could be suffereing from indegestion?

Is this (in bold) a typo on your part, or is there really a process called ieexplore.exe running? How do I add a signature?0 -

Not a typo - and it's there twice! I have a total of 55 processes running - not sure how to copy and paste them from Task Manager.
Also IE8 has really been playing up this afternoon/evening needing constant reboots of the computer.
Now also getting error messages when opening Chrome needing to reboot to solve these.
Help!0 -

Help!
Thanks for that.....well with 4gb RAM & 55 processes there certainly isn't any shortage of resources, 55 is high but not so high as to impact IE8.
Incidentally are you doubly sure you can see ieexplore.exe, and not iexplore.exe. Only iexplore appears in the HJT log?
1. What happens if you start XP in safemode with the internet?
2. Would you reboot the router, switching off, count to 10, and restart.0 -
Lets take a more comprehensive look at things. It should take 2-3 minutes.
Download DDS from the link below and save it to your desktop:
Link
After you've downloaded it and saved it to your desktop:- Double click DDS to run it.
- When it's finished, DDS will open two logs:
- DDS.txt
- Attach.txt
Copy & paste the contents of just DDS.txt for now and post it here (you may need to split the log over separate posts)0 -

Sorry - iexplore is correct - it appears twice.
Now getting lots of exception and can read errors after using IE8 for a few minuters. Also affecting Outlook Express - can't locate address book though this corrects itself after rebooting.
May just be coincidence but these majot problems only started this afternoon following an avast program update.0 -
disable avast webshield (or all shields) for 10 minutes, and try again
install and run ccleaner.
turn off popup blocker in IE, temporarily
Lots of bloat on your system, you could use msconfig, startup tab to thin out those O4 startups.!!

Well, in addition to my previous post, you could for example either:
1. Restore XP to lets say yesterday, and/or
2. Uninstall and re-install Avast (or try Avira)?0 -

I have tried a system restore to a couple of days ago, but this didn't seem to help.
Now on rebooting my desktop icons have moved, some have no proper icons and have jibberish underneath them.
Thanks to everyone for your help.0
