  • Well the elderflowers are finally in bloom, properly in bloom and I have made two batches of elderflower champagne so far will be making much more over the next week or so and some cordial too. The hedgerows here are full of masses of blackberry flowers just beginning to open and the dog roses look magnificent this year so I shall most likely be able to make Rose Hip Syrup in the Autumn. I hope it's going to be a much better year for foraging this year, it certainly looks like it at the moment, Cheers Lyn x.

The most recent foraging I did was from the garden with 5 edible flowers that were in season for my tea party on Tuesday:

No poisons either, so foraging heaven. Have permission to help myself.
Eying up the grass seed for maybe drying off for bird seed later.Lots of dandelion leaves and the dock leaves would be new.

    Happy happy days :)
I just foraged my first bag of elderflowers and my first bag of wild rose petals this afternoon for this year.

Gonna be making rose petal jam and elderflower champagne this evening :D

Does anyone know how long elderflower cordial will keep once made? And then how long it will keep once opened?

We have an abundance of elderflowers growing nearby so I was thinking of making some this year, but OH doesn't like it so I'll be the only one drinking it - if the shelf life isn't very good it may not be worth the hassle ;)
  • Hi SCARLETRAVEN if you just make the cordial and bottle it and keep it in a cupboard at room temperature it will keep for up to a couple of months but might go mouldy on top. If you keep it in the fridge once it's made, even after it's opened it should last you to the autumn. If you sterilize the sealed bottles in a waterbath after they have been made it will keep for the rest of the year until next season. However once the bottle is opened the same applies, so I keep in the fridge once it's opened. Hope that's some use, Cheers Lyn x.
