  • San Miguel Hotel in Puerto San Miguel,Ibiza. Limited availability at the moment though. Can be booked with Thomson or First Choice or booking.com (called Club Hotel Cartago on booking.com) or I have the hotels e mail address (have booked direct direct myself this yeat but usually go with Thomson).

    Thanks for reply.

Anyone else have any good suggestions for late July for 2 weeks. My kids are 13 and 9 and we're looking at 4 star or 5 if Turkey. Wife getting twitchy as I've not booked anywhere yet !

Also which site looks like the best site for deals at moment please ?

Would also consider Bulgaria if a good hotel in Sunny Beach.

    Thanks all.

I'm anti AI. I would prefer to support local business wherever i am in the world.

Plus i would hate to miss out on the location i am visiting just to eat the food at the hotel.

I'm the same. Half the fun of a holiday is exploring the area and trying out local bars and devastating. I also agree that AI hotels can be devastating for the local economy

I suppose it can work in some areas where there aren't many local amenities but in major tourist destinations it seems a waste to spend so much time in your hotel when there are dozens of other places nearby to eat and drink.

Many of the high grade Turkish hotels are built in the middle of no where ( or there are only new Ai in the area)
As for supporting the local business......before the hotel .... no employment , as told to me by the Turkish waiter/ maid/ pool boy / chef who all are now gainfully employed.

As for 'Boring' as an early poster wrote....... check out my choice last year, do you really think I was bored???

Well that's fair enough for some locations but put a 1000 bed mega-sized AI resort into some other places and you have a different result as seen on some Greek islands.

Besides, I wouldn't want to go to any hotel in the "middle of nowhere". My brother and his wife went to one in Egypt that was miles from the nearest town with nowhere else to go. They said the first few days were nice enough but after that they couldn't wait to get out and by the end it felt like a high class prison camp.

I've stayed at the Club Julian (or they might be calling it Julian Club these days) which says it's in Marmaris but is actually about a ten minute walk from the centre of Marmaris. It's AI, rated very well on Trip Advisor and has a pool with slides for the children. If you don't want to go AI, Armutulan which is the small area surrounding the hotel has lots of bars and restaurants with cheap food and buy one get one free on cocktails. I went a few years ago but some friends went recently and had a good time.

I've also stayed at the Grand Okan in Alanya, Turkey which I'd highly recommend, however it's rated in the top 5 on Trip Advisor and is a bit of a bargain so there may not be availability. They're not AI but they do half/full board and they also own a few bars and restaurants where they offer big discounts for hotel customers, one is on the beach opposite the hotel and has a great atmopshere and a live band every night.

See, just proves different strokes for different folks, I'd hate to go SC holiday as I know who would be left with the washing up :rotfl:

For me AI is just too easy, everything there. Everything paid for. Time to chillax :)

I think a lot of people don't understand the concept of self-catering accommodation.

Just because it has cooking facilities doesn't mean you have to use them.

We like S/C because you usually get a fridge (you don't tend to in smaller hotels) - which is handy for storing bottled water and white wine.

I've never, ever switched on any appliance in a S/C apartment - not even a kettle.
Someone in our apartments in Skiathos in June was complaining that she only had 2 forks. I'd not even opened the cutlery drawer! :rotfl:

We like the freedom of walking through the resort, stopping for a beer somewhere, discussing where we might like to eat, having a night-cap in a different place on the way home.
I like being able to choose what I want to eat when I want to eat it instead of having a choice of what has been put out maybe some time earlier.

However, we are a couple in our mid 50s so what I like isn't possibly going to be the same for the OP.

I can certainly see the advantage of going AI with children.

Wallbash talks sense about AI but he/she obviously doesn't go to any cheap hotel - if we ever booked AI we'd not go cheap either.

I think you also need to check what AI gives you as it differs between hotels.

I'd recommend reading reviews on Tripadvisor, paying attention to what people have to say about food.

    Maybe take a look here:

I've no idea what it's like, what facilites it has or the price but someone mentioned it on a Turkey forum I was posting on and I was curious enough to take a look, it seems to get lots of 5* reviews.

Same here except I use the kettle a good bit as I wake around 5 and like to sit on the balcony with a nice cuppa ........... or two
Fridge gets used for beer and midnight snacks

We've never cooked a single thing in a SC apartment but would always choose one.

We went AI at Christmas with the [supposedly grown up] kids as I knew who'd end up picking up all the bills :)
It was pretty good on the whole [RIU Paraiso, Lanzarote] but after 4 or 5 days, I started to have a beer and the odd snack when out and about rather than wait till we got back.
Would definitely do it every time with younger kids though.
