We dont go to all inclusive hotels any more as we found there were lots of parents letting their kids run riot while they sat drinking the 'free' beer. Dont get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with kids running about having fun - we have 3 children ourselves - but we didnt like this aspect of all-inc (maybe we just booked the wrong hotels but either way it wasnt for us!lol) We tend to book half board now (in hotels which dont offer all-inc) as we find it easier with children and then eat out a few times too.

Have a great time whatever you decide

why not go self-catering? you can get the usual cereals milk and fruit juice for breakfast and then eat out once a day and have a snack back at the apartment for the other? You can stock the frige/freezer with all the pop/ice-cream/ice-lollies the kids want and just buy them at the ice-cream parlours as a treat. you can have a drink in the evening before you go out or have a take-away chicken and some french bread if you can't be bothered going out. it's all very relaxing i find.

See, just proves different strokes for different folks, I'd hate to go SC holiday as I know who would be left with the washing up :rotfl:

For me AI is just too easy, everything there. Everything paid for. Time to chillax :)

I'm anti AI. I would prefer to support local business wherever i am in the world.

Plus i would hate to miss out on the location i am visiting just to eat the food at the hotel.

Yes there is, they make normal people's live a pain, leave them in kennels and and go enjoy a nice holiday. Can't think of anything worse.

i've done both (though no kids so can't really comment on that)

Positive of AI is not worring about making it to breakfast (HB) if we didn't fancy with the thought of having to pay for something else before dinner - great to have snacks and drinks round the pool without having to dip into your pocket each time.

Nagative - some people take the p*ss with AI and truffle as much as they can, you can feel a little 'trapped' at times as you feel you 'ought' to eat in the hotel as it's already paid for, food can be a little samey (ours was in Greece and also not covered up)

However, it hasn't put me off going AI and for a short week with kids it can take the stress out of ice cream / pop requests but I would still budget to go out and about and eat out a couple of times.

Calcualte the cost of B&B / HB / AI, along with meals out / trips etc for all three options and see what suits your budget.

Don't go when / where there are likely to be loads of kids then...you were one once too you know. Sometimes the adults can be worse than the kids (those who can't handle their drink, those who sit round the pool like Dom Jolly on thier mobile phone, those who go abroad and complain 'the food isn't like it is back home' - just a few examples)

I've loved all my holidays whether they have been self catering, half board or all inclusive and can see the pros and cons for each of them. Went to Portugal 6 years ago self catering and spent a fortune on taxis and eating out but had some really good meals. Have returned to the same all inclusive hotel in Ibiza for the past 5 years. Food is fine and my kids love it there. We do tend to treat ourselves once or twice during our holiday and eat out just for a change of scene though.
I usually start missing breakfast as the holiday progresses but the restaurant opens back up half hour after breakfast ends and you can make sandwiches or toasties.

San Miguel Hotel in Puerto San Miguel,Ibiza. Limited availability at the moment though. Can be booked with Thomson or First Choice or booking.com (called Club Hotel Cartago on booking.com) or I have the hotels e mail address (have booked direct direct myself this yeat but usually go with Thomson).
