Theft Act 1968 s12"a person shall be guilty of an offence if, without having the consent of the owner or other lawful authority, he takes any conveyance for his own or another’s use"It states clearly on every V5 that the keeper is not necessarily the legal owner. Someone other than the keeper may have a better claim to ownership depending on things like: whose name is the receipt in, whose bank account was it paid from, who is the policyholder on the insurance, whose name is any finance in, etc:
Which planet are you on? "Yes officer, I'm the owner, the registered keeper wouldn't tax it, so sorned it instead. I can still drive it though. I don't need permission from anyone else"0 -
Do as suggested earlier. Apply for the V5 in your name. Ignoring the relationship shenanigans, you are legally obliged to anyway as you are the keeper of the car.0
