But recording is available free on any Sky subscription with the right box.

Indeed, and the BBC iPlayer is coming to Sky+ HD boxes later this year.
The ITV player all be it in a very restricted form is there already as part of Anytime + VOD service.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

if you upgrade to sky+HD through a cashback site you can get £25 cashback plus £25 M&S vouchers then pay £10.25 extra for 12 months you get the bonus of many HD channels for a year after which you can cancel HD and keep box to get free to air HD channels.

M&S vouchers do vary we got £100 voucher last december, that was only reason i was allowed it kept her in doors happy.

...and a new 12 month subscription. I had a sky+ box given to me so rang up to have it switched on for recording but was told they would need a new 12 month sub so I have changed over to freeview with HD and recording and will be cancelling Sky after being a punter since 16 channel boxes were all the rage :)

Hold on, with subscription? That's not what this thread is about! You have to pay at least £10 per month to record on any Sky box. 'Free with a monthly subscription' is not 'free'.

OK I've read it again, and we had all gone a bit off topic in the thread, apologies, OP is keeping the Sky sub.
SO, The answer is yes, if you upgrade to a Sky+HD box, you'll get the 'free' HD channels (BBC1 HD, BBC HD etc), but the 'HD Pack' will cost £10.25 (and going up?) per month extra. You keep recording.
