I remember what my Mum used to call 'Cheese Pie' with great fondness. Not a pie at all; to a large oven proof dish of mashed potatoes, she'd add plenty of grated cheese, some fried onions, salt, pepper and mustard, sometimes some left over cooked veg would go in, too. All mashed up together and baked until crispy on top.....

I make all of these, but they never taste as good as when mum makes them ;)

I used to love oxtails, but they're just too expensive now as they've become "fashionable". Used to be around €2 for a whole one, regardless of size. Last time I looked they were going for €9 a kilo

I had mushy marrowfat peas last night with dinner. Brings me straight back to childhood. I even get the same ones my mother did, in the cardboard box, that need to be soaked overnight with the bicarb tablet.

Queen of pudding made with homemade jam and just a trickle of really cold cream. Love that in wintertime.

Ooooh....it's no wonder I need to lose a few pounds. All this old style cooking is far too tasty :o

My mum used to make something she called Irish Stew, which in reality was nothing like Irish Stew at all, despite my mum being Irish. It didn't have any gravy and used beef instead of lamb, and basically was a fairly dry mixture of potatoes, carrots, onion and beef - kind of hard to describe but it was absolutely delicious and the most comforting food ever invented. I would kill for some today, but sadly I never managed to replicate it and Ireland is a bit far to go for comfort food. Really must try it again soon though because it was cheap, fairly healthy and absolutely lovely.
  • Welsh Rarebit with a poached egg on top, and Sussex Pond Pudding with a whole lemon and masses of butter in the middle - so sinful but Mmmmmmmmmmmm - probably worth it!!

Had mince and dumplings the other night. Read about it on someone's blog and thought ooooh yes. Haven't made dumplings for ages as mine always sank straight to the bottom of the pan like depth charges and had the same effect on your digestion. By some stroke of luck they worked this time and it was soooo delicious. Was 10 years old again for a few happy minutes . Simple pleasures

Me too! I make these as well but my trifles are swiss roll soaked in sherry or brandy with custard over with the same alcohol added :D and when set and cold, covered in whipped cream with hundreds and thousands...yum!

we are having home made thick chicken n veg soup for tea from the leftovers n bones n veggies and for pud, smellyoldlena - my fav. with a blob of jam.

Had pear and apple pie on saturday from leftover fruit in the freezer and the main was a beef curry, I love curry.

Also do brisket, when I can find it, suet pud in the microwave and also jam sponge pud nuked.

But my fav. is bangers, egg n chips :D its my first meal whenever I come home from travelling.

This is a really unhealthy one, as being told repeatedly by my 12 and 8 yr old :o, but its bring back good memories of being at home as a child.

Fried egg with a runny yolk and chunky home made chips.

Veg stew my mum used to make with a soup mix. I can't make this at home as my OH hates soup mix.

Another is apple and blackberry crumble with custard.

there's nowt wrong with plain old egg and chips with a dollop of ketchup Food of the gods and as long as you don't eat it every day it won't kill you

My favourite is some corned beef sliced, egg and chips with a cold sliced tomato's with stewed apples and custard to follow I am as healthy as I can be, and the wrong side of 65 and it 's not done me any harm:D.Its a cheap and cheerful meal that fills you up and doesn't cost a fortune

oh reading this has brought back lots of memories. Menu plan is done for this week, but think we will substitute one day with fried liver and onions, peas and mashed tatties, followed with golden custard and prunes!

Cheap and cheerful, but really when you ananlyse it other than the oil they will be fried in, they are fulfilling quite a few of the 'daily requirements' eg iron, calcium, fruit and veg elements etc!
