If you are into old Churches, Leuchars has one of the best Norman churches in Scotland.

Oh and planespotting You can walk a public road right past the end of the airfield's apron - Take your anorak! :)

Thanks for that, pogofish. I had used Google maps last night and passed a lovely church which might have been the one. I'll watch out for the planes. Are there a lot of the noisy jets with RAF Leuchars being in the vicinity? I remember further north years ago and they used to pass overhead all of a sudden and they were soooo loud. It looked as if the bus dropped people off right at the train station which looked as if it was way out of town. Would you say that's the case? Thanks again. Cheers. Ailey. :)

I've just 'driven' round St Andrews town centre on Google Maps. It looks lovely, heaps of shops (although I better not trail hubby round here too long as he's okay with shops for a while and then gets fed up lol!). Found various eating places too so good choice for lunches and evening meal. Also found Fisher Donaldson on Church Street so will be sampling their tattie scones and strawberry tarts (I'm expecting them to be gorgeous as recommended by madvixen lol). Also the fudge doughnuts recommended by avasgranny (we'll need to take these back for a night time feast!!). Oh my goodness - I've lost 4 lbs in the last couple of weeks - I can see more than that going back on in my 3 days!! I better not be too bad as I have 2 weddings coming up over the next 4 weeks. Maybe all my walking about in St Andrews will burn off some of those cake calories!! I'm just going to go back onto Google maps to see how far it is to town when coming from New Hall. I contacted Reception and they said that we got off the bus at St Andrews bus station and take a 3 minute taxi journey. I thought the bus might go into the grounds of New Hall as it does that in one of the Edinburgh universities with the grounds being quite large. I'm sure when we have no luggage the walk will be around 10 minutes to town which is fine. I'm so looking forward to our visit. Google maps is fabulous as it gives you a feel for places before getting there. Oh I meant to say that I haven't found Jeanetta's for ice cream yet. Which street is it on as with it being recommended, it must be good, so we must try it out?

if you do not go to Leuchars you will be missing one of the loveliest secluded beaches in the area - kinshaldie beech is the 1st turning on the left when you enter leuchars, there is nothing commercial about it and it is absoultely lovely - occasional jet flying overhead- but it is a lovely unspoilt stretch of sand.

Thanks for the information, converted. When we return from St Andrews to Leuchars, we'll have our cases with us so it will probably be easier to head straight for the train. I went into Google maps and it looks as if the bus drops people right at the train station which seems to be on its own out of town. Many thanks again for your info. Cheers. ailey :)

Oh great, I found South Street okay so should find it fine then. Weather forecast a bit mixed but hoods up and away we go! Never been to Fife area before so will be good to see a different part of the country. Thanks again for all your help, madvixen. xx :T

Well everyone we got back from St Andrews last night and had a lovely 3 days there. Monday was lovely and warm and so was Thursday but we left midday. Tuesday and Wednesday were light showers occasionally but didn't hold us back. Had a lovely meal in Tailender on Monday night, had another in Ogdens with our son, who had come through from Edinburgh on the Tuesday (reasonably nice) and the finale was on the Wednesday in The Doll's House Restaurant which was just fab! They offer a 2-course meal for £11.95 but you can only have a starter and main course. We were really bad and had sticky toffee pudding at £4.95 each - it was wonderful! I suppose because they do it that way, it sells more 3-course meals. Not large meals so you don't feel all bagged up. 3 nights in a row we had sticky toffee pudding!!!! Tailender one was gorgeous and probably on a par with the Doll's house version. The one from Ogdens was nothing special. Is it any wonder I put on 3 pounds lol! I also had 2 cakes from Fisher Donaldson. I asked for fudge doughnuts but they had none left. As I was saying to Avasgranny, another 2 people also asked for fudge doughnuts so 3 requests within 5 minutes. They sell 100 per day so I said they need to order 150! We stayed for 3 nights in New Hall university accommodation which had everything we needed. The breakfasts are fabulous with everything you could wish for available and a very large dining room where people were very friendly. Big tables so there is always other people at your table and most of them will chat. 3 Japanese lads on the first morning at our table but not good English but one of them did have some. Saw them outside in town a couple of times and they were very friendly and waving and smiling so even with not much English they were still friendly which was nice. There was a big saxophone congress on which they were playing at so lots of visitors for that and a lot were staying at New Hall. Apparently the last couple of congresses were in Thailand and Slovenia so excellent for St Andrews that they were chosen for this congress.

We also went out to Scotland's Secret Bunker, about 15 mins on the bus and then a 40 minute country walk!! It was very interesting and we were glad that we made the attempt to get there.

Maybe next year we'll stay in Dundee and take some tours around the other coastal towns in Fife. l would like to see Anstruther, Pittenweem, Crail etc.

Now I can say that we've been to Fife as it's a corner we had never been to. I'm glad we visited and sorry again that we missed you, avasgranny, when we popped into the hotel you work in.

Thank you all so much again for all your help. Aren't people on forums so willing to help. How did we manage without them before? Cheers to all. ailey xx :T
