You'll love St Andrews, it's an amazing place - although I'm biased as I grew up there :j

If you get some nice weather, head up to Craigtoun Park, it's about 3 miles out of town and free entry. We used to spend days there as kids just running around, eating ice cream and chasing geese :D

The Cathedral is a really nice half day activity and kids love the tunnels underneath. There's also St Rules tower which (if you can face the climb) offers fantastic views of the town and bay.

The Himalaya's down at the beach offers pitch and putt with attitude and from there you can walk the length of the beach down towards Leuchars, there's normally seals around further down the beach.

In terms of eating places, Jeanetta's is a must - amazing ice cream and normally 50 odd flavours available. Also, go to Fisher Donaldson bakers and sample the tattie scones, Scotch Pies and Strawberry Tarts - lovely.

    For B&B's try http://www.standrewsbandbs.co.uk/bed&breakfasts.htm
many of them are in walking distance to the town centre.

Have a wonderful time, I'm very jealous

Thanks for all that information, Madvixen. You're lucky to have grown up there by the sound of it. I've checked out so many houses and hotels and they are really expensive. Looked at the university accommodation also and it's around £81 per night so St Andrews really is a very expensive place to stay. I suppose it with the number of people who come to golf that they can charge high rates. I'll have a look at the B&B link to see how they fare. Dundee would certainly be another choice as other helpful people have suggested but I would rather experience St Andrews every day. If I can't get anything at a reasonable rate, I'll have to stay in Dundee. I need to check out a link someone gave me to see how long it takes by bus from Dundee to St Andrews. I'll copy your information onto my pages for going. Many thanks once again for your help. Cheers. Ailey :T

So I did, and Scotch Pancakes mmmmmmm hungry now.

The other option for where to stay would be to try Craigtoun Meadows Caravan Park. I've stayed there a couple of times at short notice and they've been really reasonable prices. The only downside is that it is about 3 miles out of town so you'd need to get a bus in.

Hi all - I eventually got booked. I discovered the University (New Hall) offered accommodation which is probably similar to the Travelodges and we'll only be sleeping there and having breakfast which got good reviews on TripAdvisor.co.uk. It cost £233 for 3 nights B&B so saved around £200 compared to the hotels so we can use that for our meals out. Good economics lol! Got to make the pensions spread out! Thanks for all your helpful suggestions.

Another wee question: We have to check out at 10 am so am wondering whether to stay an extra 3 hours in St Andrews or to have a look around Leuchars before we get the train back. I know there will certainly be more in St Andrews but after 3 days there, I wondered if it is worth having a wee potter around Leuchars. Thanks again and sorry I'm asking more questions lol. Cheers. Ailey :T

There's not an awful lot to do in Leuchars so you're probably best just staying in St Andrews for the 3 hours. Maybe have a walk on the beach and then an early lunch?

So glad you found somewhere to stay. Have a fantastic time!

Thanks again, madvixen. That's what I thought may be the case. We check out at 10 am and the uni accommodation have left luggage so that's really good. We can do something else before we head back to Leuchars for the train. I just booked the 12.46 so possibly an early lunch before catching the bus to Leuchars would be a good idea as we have to get 3 trains (change at Edinburgh then Glasgow). So looking forward to it now. It's nice to see other places. We'll check out the bus timetable and maybe get to one or two of the other towns nearby also. I've got 2 pages of information printed off which all you lovely people have given me. It's always handy to refer to when away. MSE forums are fab - everyone is so helpful. Thanks again everyone. Cheers. Ailey xx :T

If you are into old Churches, Leuchars has one of the best Norman churches in Scotland.

Thanks avasgranny! Ardgowan Hotel, I remembered, because the street below us is called Ardgowan Street lol! Do they do nice lunches? We'll possibly call in if we're passing at lunchtime or thereabouts. Thanks again. Can you order some sunshine and no rain for us lol! Cheers. Ailey xx :)
