Fabulous site, thanks GoldenJill. I've never been on that site before and it will be immensely useful. Thanks again. Cheers. Ailey :)

You're unlikely to get any bargains in St Andrews as it's probably the most popular destination in Fife and many of the visitors have very deep pockets (a lot of them are there to play golf) so accommodation prices are high. I also find Dundee to be expensive for what it offers, although I felt the Travelodge Strathmore Avenue was not bad if you can get it cheap - although it's a bit far from the centre and you've really left it too late for the best prices at budget hotels.

Many of the Fife coast villages are very nice, both to the east of Kircaldy and some of the ones to the west, such as Aberdour. Cupar is a nice small town, and there are some sights worth seeing in Dunfermline, such as the Abbey and Andrew Carnegie's birthplace.

If you are relying on public transport that will limit your ability to stay away from the main centres, and may make it impossible to stay at more rural locations.

There are lots of agencies offering holiday lets, and you may be lucky and get one cheap at short notice, although bear in mind it will soon be Scottish school holidays (ah, just looked it up, they have already started in Fife). The National Trust for Scotland may be worth a look:

And the Visit Scotland website should offer some options:

 You are brave agrinnall  The 'hotel' in strathmore avenue is more of a hostel given some of the clientele that end up in there. It is next to the Hilltown which is one of the roughest areas of the city. I would avoid there like the plague.

OP, I would second staying in Dundee, it has loads that big cities have in terms of transport, things to do, places to eat and drink etc but is very compact and most things are within walking distance. Dundee is a great place and there are excellent transport links to Fife.

Thanks agrinnall for this information. I'm just going back out to the garden to try to get another bit done (if I don't get eaten alive by midgies!!) then I'll check out these sites. I know we've left it late but we were away for 3 days to Carlisle at the beginning of June and have 10 days in Aberdeenshire visiting family in August so just thought it would be nice to visit Fife area for 3 days to a week in July depending on what accommodation we can get. I'm usually organised well in advance but just a last minute decision. We've got a wedding at the start of the 3rd week so restricted to some time between some time this week and 17th July. Thanks so much for your help (everyone is so helpful with all the information provided) and I'll see how I get on in a little while tonight with these sites. Cheers. :T

Thanks ali-t - always good to know other people's experiences or knowledge of hotels etc.

I was thinking about trying Dundee a while back but wasn't sure what was there so I'll also check that out. I might not manage anything in St Andrews but even if we get there for the day, I suppose is better than nothing. Cheers. :T

I'll take a note and watch it. I didn't know it was on. I seem to miss so much these days. Thanks so much for that ali-t. Cheers. Ailey :)

I live in Dundee - it's a nice place, but under-rates itself at times. Great place to base yourself and get the bus to other places on a daily basis as the accommodation is plentiful ( there are Days Inn, Premier Inn etc. on top of the usual B&Bs)

Fab shopping that's in pedestrian areas and easily walkable from end to end, plus there's a beach at Broughty Ferry -part of dundee bus routes ( you could spend a whole day in broughty no problem) has cinemas, free museum, shops, railway station.

I fear you are exaggerating somewhat, have you actually stayed there? Certainly when I did it felt very much like any other budget hotel, and nothing like a hostel. It's the highest rated on the 3 Travelodges in Dundee on Tripadvisor, and I had no issue with the area.

I haven't stayed in it as I live in the area but have been in it. It is next door to a residential unit for children, when it was the days inn it was used as a hostel for homeless people as emergency accomodation and is definitely not in my reccomended list for anyone staying locally.
