Vodafone has taken over £300 over a year after I cancelled!

I cancelled my Vodafone account in May 2011 after starting a O2 account. I didn't realise until 3 days ago that they have taken £24 a month from my account!
After contacting them, they have said I asked for a PAC which I obviously didn't. They have offered me 3 months of money back but must pay next months £24 as well before closing the account.
They admit the account has not been used since that date and havent sent me any bills or tried to be in touch with me.
I admit to being an idiot in not checking my bank account but don't deserve to lose £300.

If they used to send you bills prior to you cancelling and then no longer did for the last year I would take that as proof that teh account should have been closed.
Presumably you got a new number when you started your O2 account?
You should have noticed the money coming out at some point before now as its now a battle to get it back.0 -
Did you not get a final bill confirming you cancelled the account?0

If you asked for a PAC but didn't use it then the contract (as you know) keeps going. You would still have had texts or emails telling you that your monthly bill was ready. You can keep trying, but if you didn't cancel the line, i don't know that they've done a lot wrong.0

I didn't request a PAC and emailed them to cancel my account. I started a new contract and new number with iphone.
I can't remember getting a cancel confirmation as I had alot going on medically with the family at the time. And yeah I know I should have checked my bank statements as I said0 -

And I have asked them how they have sent my bills, whether it is by email or text. They said they dont have to send them. Its up to me to log in on their site online and check my bills??? I have requested Ombudsman Scheme that they are under and they just keep ignoring that and only repeating that I asked for a PAC0

Have you looked in sent folder to see if that email is still there?0 -
Hi, Thanks for all of your replies
After being offered 3 months worth of the 12 months taken, I was offered 6 months (after proving many mistakes they have made since being in contact with me recently).
After requesting the Ombudsman they are under (I had to ask 3 times before they gave it-OFCOM) I requested 9 months or I would send all of my evidence to Ofcom.
After a couple more argumentative (but respectful) emails, they agreed.
I know it's not all of my money, but I didn't save the evidence that I had cancelled, plus it was partly my stupid fault that I didn't check my account !
So, not a bad result. A lesson is learnt!0 -
well fought - although how Vodafone can justify holding back three months when repaying 9 is actually beyond me0

Well done pursuing this. To answer the last post, Vodafone will be treating this refund as a Goodwill gesture.
As OP says, a lesson learnt, but there is one more.
ALWAYS cancel a contract using your PAC code, transferring the number either to your next contract or to a PAYG sim on another network. You are then absolutely sure your contract has terminated and you have proof should any DDs continue to hit you.0
