  • Thanks everyone. I have got it in a plastic tub with damp kitchen roll at the moment, I will see how that goes. I have some seeds that I now want to go and plant. Will try some of the other ideas over the next couple of weeks.

Treat it like flowers, trim a tiny bit off the stalk, and stand it in a bowl with a drop of water in the bottom ~ keeps fresh for ages.

sarerb18 - I'm going to try sprouting using your method. Where to you keep your plastic tub (? in the dark) and do you need to put the lid on the tub? Also, what are broccoli seeds and where do you get them? Which are your favourite and most successful for sprouting. I know - questions, questions questions but I buy bags from the supermarket and they are the only thing I end up throwing out as I haven't found a way to keep them fresh before they begin to look rancid.
Did a quick search and found this which is very useful. Going to use it myself so thanks for jogging me. Most places that sell seeds do the sprouting kind and although they look expensive they go a long way.

you might find something on the organic sites as well.

I feel silly posting about lettuce but I love iceberg lettuce, I don't have it very often as I find it goes limp and brown so quickly, I'm the only one in my household who has it, and can't get through it quick enough (even the half ones) without ending up throwing some away so I don't have it often. Is there a better way to store it, currently I put it in the veg/salad box in the fridge. I have the same problem with cos lettuce as well although not as badly. Thanks for any help!

I found the best way of storing lettuce is with damp kitchen roll in the same airtight container....would you believe though that home grown lettuce can last a good fortnight in the fridge whereas shop bought lettuce only a few days. Shows how old it is before you get it.

Chop it up and put it in an air tight container.

I don't put mine in the fridge I put it in a colander lined with kitchen roll and keep it covered it lasts a lot longer so does cucumber, if you put it in the fridge it goes off quicker

I have a Lettuce crisper bought from Tupperware a few years ago and I can keep an iceberg lettuce in there for 2 weeks just taking off the bits I need then replacing it in the fridge. I am not sure if they do them anymore and I remember it was expensive. This one http://www.lakeland.co.uk/F/keyword/Lettuce%20crisper from lakeland is very similar and is reasonably priced at £6.99

    Hi vikki_;ouise,

There's an earlier thread with lots of tips on storing lettuce so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.
