Have a kindle, wasnt too keen at first, but it was a surprise birthday present, and I love it. Wouldnt be without it now, especially fab for commuting and holidays. I also do a lot of waiting around, so always have it in my handbag.

I down load a mixture of paid and free books, but still read lots of real books. I wouldnt get rid of any of my HUGE book collection.
I buy books from amazon, ebay, carboot sales, charity shops, but rarely buy brand new books. (so still very os :))

  • Unfortunately it is often cheaper to buy hard copy books at £3 on Amazon. These books tend to be the lowest quality commensurate with price.
Kindle books tend to be priced higher due to Govt taking unfair VAT tax.
These are complete anomalies and patently unjust.
As a kindle user I prefer to download books as it's faster, more immediate, pending funds in Account and reading is a more convenient process than folding over pages or annotating in pencil to personalise the book in hand.
However as an academic books fan I try to get books at lowest possible price, at highest possible qaulity with compromises to get hold of fantastic quality authors good Academics whose books help me more than any Media outlet can.(Despite the fact this sounds the very opposite of MSE)

4chickens, you should be able to buy a Kindle very cheaply in Walmart when you are in the USA, so you won't waste much if you don't like it.

I paid $79 and got a $30 gift card from them in April. it took me a while but I love it now. So light!

I've been thinking about selling some books on Amazon - have loads of English criticism which I no longer need; whill give it a whirl when unis go back.

I resisted a kindle too, until my sister in law, and then my brother bought one, and he is an absolute bookworm! I had a play with theirs, and loved it! My hubby bought me one in feb.

I love books! I have only paid for 3 books and have approx 90 books on my kindle. I also get the ereaderiq email every day, which I can highly recommend, I've read things that I definately wouldn't have bought, but thoroughly enjoyed them.

I've just put on quite a few books for my holiday next week, we're on a small sailing boat in turkey, with no plug sockets! But that's ok, with my kindle on airplane mode, it usually lasts about a month for bedtime reading so should be fine for a week! I've also put a couple of paperbacks in 'just in case' ~ I can't imagine not having anything to read!

I still buy books, usually from charity shops, and with more popular authors, such as Sophie kinsella, it's much cheaper.

Go for the kindle for your trip, load it up, you won't regret it! Then when you're home, you can dive back into your 'proper' books!!!

Enjoy your trip, sounds fabulous! :)

4chickens I have a Sony Ereader and I can borrow books from the library on it and I'm not tied into Amazon.

I've borrowed from the library online, had free ebooks and bought ebooks from Kobo & Waterstones BUT I still love real books!!

I buy real books from Charity shops, Book Depository and 2nd hand from Amazon I also can't resist lovely new books now & then.

I also buy a lot of 2nd and knitting & caft books so one way and another I have far too many books.

The Ereader is a dream when travelling as you can carry 100's of books with you. The battery also lasts for ages.

I don't think it's a choice between ebooks & real book as there is a place for both.

    Happy reading!

I have had the Book vs Kindle conundrum going for quite some time, I love my books and if they are a great read I love that I have them forever and that I can lend them to friends to read, its very social.

However I have heard the kindle ebooks are cheaper and they promote free books and are, lighter, easy to read, have access to thousands of books and you can read them right there and then! No ordering or going to the shop!

    But what if it breaks!?
Are books going to be a thing of the past!? I don't think I could bare that :-(
