Buying Used Books

I bet you are all busy reading reviews of my book list now.
I am not studying or anything but wanted to stock up on books to last me through the summer and hopefully my holiday in September. And it is the holiday to Canada and America that has made me consider a Kindle. Whilst in Canada we'll be staying in a cabin and fishing for a week, so it will be pretty sedentry and plenty of time for reading. Whilst in America I am at my Mums farm so again not alot of excitement but plenty of relaxation.
I would read approx 2 books in a week so I am thinking about the weight of my luggage really. I will need 4 books for the 2 weeks and that doesn't include the book I will read on the flight to America, the book I will read on the drive back from Canada and the book I will read on the flight home to England.
My husband doesn't let me drive in America and Canada, he says it's the only time he gets travel sickness, though I will admit to hugging the mail boxes and the road ditches.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
If it were not for the travelling i would say books every time. I read a lot, and when i used to travel with the current luggage allowances etc it really is an issue. So reluctantly i suggest you give the kindle serious consideration. If your mother lives in america chances are you will be long hauling reasonably often, and depending on where that is a long flight. Easily a boos worth if you read though most of it, two possibly if you are a swift reader and you count time with your ho
D luggage stashed and your carry on bag only, so thats a heft space taken in your carry on luggage. I know this because i do books and try to only travel with carry on luggage on a way out so take a minimum of three (four now the number of nooks you have to buy to get a free one has gone up) and it is a pita and heavy, but the idea of not having access to something to read because it is in a hold is no good either.0 -
I love books. I used to work in a second hand bookshop. Have bought new and second hand from Amazon several times with no problems. You can make huge savings by buying an older edition if you don't need a specific edition.
I have a Kindle - I love it - I have over 200 books on it, which means I can read what I fancy when ever I fancy it, instead of having to carry lots of heavy paper with me. I also find the thick meaty paperbacks I love too tiring to hold for long - not a problem with the Kindle (and you can have instant 'large print' books without having to buy special bulky editions too)Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
Lostinrates comment just made me think - is it possible to order one or two of the books from America/Canada to be delivered to your relatives for the later part of your holiday, and leave the earlier ones in America/Canada when they are finished with? Obviously doesn't work if you want to keep them on your bookshelves once you get back home.

I have bought 2nd hand from amazon, though I tend to stick to UK sellers (I always think it'll get here more quickly, and there's less chance of it going missing in the post than if the book has to come all the way from the U.S.)
Other good places to scout for 2nd hand books are greenmetropolis.com (all books are £3.75 incl postage) and EBay. I bought a book 2nd hand on EBay recently for £2.70, free postage :money:
Play.com is another option, though I must admit I think of them more for cd's and dvd's
Can't advise on the kindle, though they are apparently very popular, and the screen quality is supposed to be good, so not too tiring on the eyes. I just prefer 'proper' books and am not a gadgetty person

I wish I could remember what it's called but there a service not unlike a library where you choose books you want to read(on the internet)and they are sent to you and all you pay is the postage and then after reading you send them back. If you choose paperbacks this does not cost too much..."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

I ummed and ahhed about a kindle since Christmas and too the plunge last week - I had enough Amazon vouchers, I have since downloaded 200 free books http://www.ereaderiq.co.uk/free/ is really useful.
I love looking at books, reading the blurb, seeing how much left to read, space means my 2 bookcases are full and not sure a third is a good plan. So an e reader does help with that and allows me to organise Everything into categories, i try on the book shelves but space rather than order has to take precedence - chick lit next to a thriller, white covers next to black {shudder}.
I think you definitely need a cover, it keeps the book feel a bit.0 -
Canadian chiming in here. Kindle's are good for travelling.
But personally, I'd either go Kindle all the way for travelling OR take one "real" book with me on the flight and buy the rest either in a used book store over here. Just don't be tied to a list.
If you are going to the US first, buy the books there as they are usually cheaper than up in Canada. Also, you're coming in Garage Sale season and books are usually dirt cheap at them.0 -
This could be the site I was talking about based in the UK...
